I can't think of any etiquette books that say that cash bars are okay. So I think you're all good.
  • I try and not engage in the topic as often anymore.  I did last night, but I've really cut back.  There are certain triggers that get me to engage. Last night the words "against" and "would be offended" at an open bar peaked my interest.   I thought and still do think they were odd emotions and feelings when it comes to providing something free to a guest.

People are going to do what they want to do.  Some people are correct, it is normal in their social group.   ::shrugs::

I'm just happy to know it's nothing I would consider and my own social group considers it rude and tacky.  Been attending wedding for many, many years now.  Haven't been invited to one nor do I think I ever will.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Anyway, you made comments in the existing cash bar thread up top and then started a new one a few minutes later because.......?

My dog does that too. Because why should it matter if I need some sleep, he wants to play darn it. Yeah, he's kind of a special snowflake.

I wish my cat would do that. She's a terrible alarm clock. Lazy little brat.

My cat, who lives with FI (breaks my heart), wakes us up at 6am every single morning. FI still will not feed her until 7am on work days and 9am on weekends, but she still feels like waking us up to beg for food. She has a loud meow and knows exactly where to pounce on the bed to wake us up (stomach or face).

  • @HisGirlFriday13 no, you'll love having a kitty.  They are fun. entertaining, adorable, loving, cuddley, etc.  Cats are literally the best.

  • I wish my cat would wake me up. She tries to actively prevent me from getting out of bed. Teeth, you know.
  • My cat is sleeping on my lap. Think I'm going to tell you not to get a cat? They're so snuggly!
  • He's been wanting one for ages. I've been the hold out. I gave in. We're currently looking at local kitties available for adoption at the SPCA.

Any thoughts on getting a set of them? Is it better to have a playmate for them?

YES! do this. I have an only cat and now he freaks at any other animals around. He got used to being the only pet, that whenever we take him around my any of my family's animals he turns into a little jerk and just hisses and cries under furniture lol

We are thinking about getting a dog now and I'm a little worried about how he is going to react.

I wish we would have gotten two so she has a friend. I would get two. The vets in our area and at FI's school recommend getting two.  We are reluctant to try to get a second cat now because Callie (my cat) is kind of a bully now when she visits my parents, but she wasn't that way when she was young and she had siblings that she played with. I've always been a two cat home until now (FI's family had five, but they fostered cats and FI's parents were both vets).

Definitely get a playmate. A lot of the time they will have, for lack of a better word, "sets" that they try to adopt out together either because the kitties are siblings or because they formed a bond and are really close. The two kitties I adopted a few months ago formed a close bond in their foster home and they are the best of friends.
  • I have only gotten one cat at a time and once adopted a pregnant cat who had kittens (we didn't know she was pregnant at the time).  My cat Maggie is more of a solo kitty, but occasionally she will go over to my other cat Cali (the cat that had kittens) and put her head down in hopes of getting licks/kisses.  Cali usually just sits there or walks away.  My mom has one of the kittens who is about five now.  She also has a cuddley, lazy cat who adopted a kitten as his own when my mom brought the kitten home.  All of her cats get along for the most part and clean each other, sleep together, etc.  Sometimes at shelters they have kitties that already have a bond established and they either must be or are preferred to be adopted together.

Kitty is 18 years old. We adopted her from the SPCA alone. I wish we had adopted two (although that would be twice the cost over her lifetime - yikes). I think Kitty misses her siblings or her Mama or something. She carries around this little stuffed animal tiger and cries with it when my H or I leave the house. Or if she forgets we are home after waking up from a nap.

"Baby" (the name of the stuffed animal) was in my closet with a ton of stuffed animals (I got Kitty when I was 14) and she picked it out of all the others and it's been her Baby ever since. She never showed interest in another stuffed animal.

  • Definitely get a playmate! My kitty gets lonely when we are gone and she always wants some one to play with her. Our condo has a 1 pet per unit bylaw which is the only reason why we haven't gotten a second kitty.

@doeydo I KNOW! It's really sad! She ignores it for the most part unless she does her crying thing with it (and only picks it up on one side, interestingly enough). She's super smart so sometimes when I'm getting ready to leave the house she'll watch me and go sit next to Baby. It breaks my heart that she is getting sad about me leaving and preparing for it.

    stuck in a box...
I really recommend adopting a pair if you can, and if you can adopt litter mates like we did, then all the better!!  We had a super cool cat, Meathead, with an awesome personality and he was always super healthy.  He was 13 and still running around like a kitten but we knew we needed to get him a buddy since we had lost Blossom earlier.  (Yes, she was named after the show).
Why do I get a new box every time I hit the return key?  Anyhoo - we rescued Nermal from DS's daycare his last year there and things went well.  2 months later Meathead either had an aneurysm, stroke, etc but we lost him very very quickly and we were devastated.  A few months later we went to PetSmart to find ONE kitten to bring home so Nermal wouldn't be lonely. We brought home two - Einstein and Newton.  They were twins and there was no splitting them up.  Part Maine Coon, quite big kitties.  We lost Newton 3 1/2 years ago.  He was so awesome but he had bad kidneys and was most likely born that way.  We have Einstein (all 19 pounds of the world's dumbest but very cool cat) and we have our 9 pound Nermal.
I could never imagine only having one kitty but I know many who do.  I just think that if you can, it is really nice to have a pair so they don't get lonely and they can chase each other.

  • There are several 'sets' of kittens available, and our local SPCA usual does a special where if you adopt one half of the set at full price ($60), you get the other one 50% off ($30), so $90 for two isn't bad.

Thoughts on gender? Boys or girls or one of each?

  • I tried to avoid reading this thread because the title is in all caps and it's about one of my least favorite topics.  And it's really about adopting kitties!  What a pleasant surprise!!!

Disclaimer, this is from personal experience not researched: I think it is more about the personality than the gender. Some boys have been known to spray but usually if they are neutered they won't. I wouldn't get two boys, just in case they both decide to start marking territory. FI's family had that issue with three boys. I would think that two girls wouldn't be a problem or a guy and a girl, but again I think it comes down to personality of the cat as much as gender.
