Fry sauce is THE BEST THING EVER. And ever since I left Oregon, people look at me like I'm crazy when I mention it. Apparently it does not exist in MN or OH.

ETA: I'm not sure what all is in it. I used to have to make it at work and I'm pretty sure it involves ketchup and mayo. And pickle juice for sure.

French fries should only be eaten with ketchup, bbq sauce, or fry sauce.

    Or mustard.

ETA: I do not wish to indicate a dislike for poutine, which I am going to have to make again in the next few days.

Poutine is on my list of things to eat the moment DH and I go to Canada in the fall. Literally as soon as we cross the border.

aka "spread" at In N Out.

I've never heard it as "fry sauce" though, and have never met anyone that orders it at a place that doesn't serve it automatically.

    Well, it is better!!

    Eta: Pickle juice, mayo, ketchup
Maybe the ratios are better? I know they serve it in southern Idaho too. My mom made it on hs for the local fast food.

Mustard is fine, with ketchup. But that is pushing it :)

Way to give us Canadians a bad name. Seriously. I live in the most unrefined and hick area possible and would never fathom doing something as tacky as that!
Aw, you must live near me!!!!!
In my geographic area the norm is Buck and Does, Cash Bar, Honeyfund, B-list weddings just shy of camo and shot-guns (although, not by much).  Sigh...I'm so tired of the excuses 'weddings/alcohol/life is expensive - but I live in Canada and it's just how we do things...waaaaaah'.  HELL NO! Get over yourself and put on your big girl panties and host a proper party that you can afford!

    And yes, poutine is awesome!!!!!

I'm jumping in on the fry conversation...when we were in Europe for our honeymoon - that we paid for ourselves with no Honeyfund - ;)...my hubby introduced me to something that I crave now when drinking - CURRY CHIPS AND CHEESE.  Anyone have that before?  It is essentially curry sauce and melted cheese on top of french fries.  DELISH!

I like to dip them in ranch dressing.

True story: One time, we dipped a variety of foods in ranch dressing to see how they tasted. Most foods tastes great, but donuts and pasta not so much.

Mayo is disgusting. That's my input.

For my metro Detroiters... best fries I've ever had are at a restaurant in downtown B'ham called The Bird and the Bread... truffle oil fries with caper aioli topped with chicken cracklins. Go there. You're welcome. Ah and the sweet potato tots at Basement Burger Bar!

I'm also aboard the fries-dipped-in-chocolate-Frosty bandwagon. And the ranch dressing wagon. Mmmm pizza dipped in ranch...

Curry makes me vomit. So I'm pretty sure I'd hate that :)

Vinegar by itself should never be used as a condiment. Put it in some oil and I will use my bread to dip the shit out of that.  In the famous words of King Baby, aka Jim Gaffigan.

Nope, sorry. I like my fries with cheese and bacon. Or dipped in a chocolate Frosty from Wendy's. Or with sriracha.

I went to a wedding last summer where we all ended up at a casino after the reception. I was drunk and hungry, so FI and I got cheese & bacon fries at Johnny Rockets. Best night ever.

Bahaha, you must be in Westerrn Canada too! (I'm in Saskatchewan)... and yes, I COMPLETELY know how you feel. Yes,it is the norm but that is no excuse for being rude. Thankfully, my family originates from Eastern Canada and has always been taught the polite way of doing things. I don't care if it's the 'norm'... BE DIFFERENT, don't be another sheep that follows the rrest of the rude barn animals.

On a side note - I had a friend who was planning a wedding that I shit you not, was going to have a camo cake, pictures with guns, and I would not have been surprised if she wanted us to get camo dresses with cowboy boots. Unfortunately (but thankfully for me) the engagement ended. She is a very good friend so I would have sucked it up but DEAR GOD, PEOPLE!!

I shall tell you all about the magic of fry sauce!

Fry sauce was a special sauce born in Utah (our claim to fame! that and the first KFC supposedly, yuck.) at Crown Burger.

Fry sauce is ketchup, mayonnaise, and a little bit of sweet pickle juice. It's amazing. Try it, your life will be changed. It's slowly spreading throughout the western U.S. It's all very exciting. :]
    Yuck!

I'm not a big ketchup or pickle person.  I like ranch dressing with fries :-)

Fries with malt vinegar is one of my favorite things ever. I put so much on it makes me sickly. But it's so good!
THIS. When my American relatives would visit in the 90s, my Aunt used to stock up on salt & vinegar chips as they weren't available there yet. Also, over-the-counter antihistamines.

If you're ever in Montreal and in the mood for fancy shmancy poutine, there's a place in Old Montreal called Boris Bistro that has fries done in duck fat, with guinea fowl, blue cheese, and a whiskey sauce. It's kind of the best/worst thing that's ever happened to my arteries.

@CamiSelene and @LDay2014 - I'm not sure it's a Western Canada thing, I'm in Ontario, east of Toronto and yeesh the things I've seen. No camo yet, thank goodness. But I fear that we as a country are more susceptible to Pinterest.

I'm Canadian and also find the OPs post to be very offensive. What the heck??

@CamiSelene and @LDay2014 I'm from ON and now live in AB- I've never noticed anyone in AB (and one in BC) to be any more "tacky" regarding weddings than anything I've been to in ON. In both regions, I've been to/heard of very well hosted weddings and those with some etiquette faux-pas.

As per tipping, I thought 15% was pretty standard in Canada for good service- if service was less than ideal, I do not automatically tip that 15%. In many places in Europe, gratuity is factored into the price of the meal already, so tips are generally not left- maybe a coin to let them know you were very pleased.

Lol, @sp29 I wasn't saying all weddings in western Canada are tacky or rude. I've been to some well hosted weddings before as well. I have noticed, however, in small towns like the one I currently live in that has roughly 1000 people I have seemed to come across a few doozies and from my experience I have yet to go to a really bad wedding in Eastern Canada (that could just be because of my family though).

I'm late to the french fry party, but now I want fries!

Also: I hate both ketchup and mayo, about as much as honeymoon registries.  I'm having trouble deciding which is the worst.  *shudder*

If it makes you feel better, I don't like mayo (though I love fry sauce).  Ketchup is my favorite though. I went to Ireland and pretty much lived off of fish and chips and shepherds pie. I could never find enough ketchup. Why did each table only have one or two packets? That wasn't enough for my fries, let alone everyone else's. :) My only complaint about Ireland.
