Opinion

Just curious what others might think.  My sister owns her own business, and works on weekends.  I have scheduled some appointments to look at bridesmaid dresses on the weekends.  In order for her to be able to go, she has to pay someone to work at her store for her.  My father thinks that we should be taking money from the wedding budget to pay this person to work at my sister's store so my sister can attend these appointments.  Wondering how others feel, if you feel this is appropriate or not.

I think you should try to schedule some appointments during the week as well so she can attend.  How important is it to you that she be at the appointments?

Thanks for the feedback so far.  I should add that she only takes 1 day off during the week, so that would be the only day which appointments could be scheduled.  If it were not possible to schedule appointments on her day off.....then is it appropriate to take from the wedding budget to pay someone to work at her store?

Is it something she really needs to do?  I picked out my bridesmaid dresses without any of the other girls, and sent them pics to make sure they liked it, then I am having them get fitted on their own.   I dont think it is absolutely necessary for her to be there and if she really really wants to go, im sure she would do it on her time....its not something you need to pay her for.

I agree in that you should take a look at scheduling for the day she has off of work.  I don't agree with your father thinking that you should take money out of your wedding budget to pay someone.  Not all bridesmaids must be present to pick out a dress.

Make the appointment when it is convenient for most people.  Do not force anyone to come.

I gave my girls a color and length of dress and allowed them to choose their own... that way there wasn't any appointment nonsense and everyone chose a dress that flattered their figure.  Is this an option for you?

If most of your bridesmaids can attend a weekend appointment, go with that. Then if its still really important for you to share that experience with your sister, make an appointment for during the week with just the two of you. Or have the appointment with your sister first, then that weekend have the group appointment. When I went dress shopping for myself, FSIL/MOH was along for the ride and we looked at bridesmaid dresses for fun and found one we loved. Sent a picture to the other bridesmaids and everyone liked it so there was no need to go to the bridal salon and have 6 people picking out a ton of dresses to choose from. Now we're gonna set up an appointment for everyone who can make it to go to the salon together to get measured... We'll probably double this appointment with when my dress comes in, so they can all see it too. This way there's no issue if anyone can't make it, it'll be a fun day for those who can, but those who cant will just send in their measuremants.

She has made the choice to own/ operate her own business. Is your dad also asking you to use some of the budget to pay for an employee on the day of the wedding? Part of owning a business is the cost of having employees.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback!  Unfortunately my work schedule is unforgiving, and it's very difficult for me to get off on the day that my sister is off.  So, weekend appointments are our only option.  Being that is the case, is it appropriate/fair to pay someone to work at her store out of the wedding budget?

No, it is not your responsibility to pay someone.  Buy your sister lunch!

I agree with the other girls. I went to the bridal shop with one of my bridesmaids that was available and she picked out a dress that everyone loved. The other girls were not even mad that they weren't there.

No, it is not appropriate for you to pay someone to work for your sister.  As a pp said, part of opperating a business is the cost of employees.  Another cost of being self-employed is that you sometimes miss out on things you would like to be at.  I can think of several holidays and other events that my father had to work through because he was the business owner and couldn't get anyone else to come in.

No!  Not your problem to pay someone.  If your sister were getting married & you had to take off work to attend, would she pay you your wage lost that day?
