Science is awesome. And creepy.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/30/tech/innovation/cultured-meat/index.html?c=tech

Cliffs notes: this article is about advances in biotech that could theoretically lead to artificial meat made in labs for human consumption. They're not that close or anything but it's interesting. The slide show on the top is interesting too - so many of our greatest technological fears are close to being developed - driverless cars, robots to care for elderly/etc, and others.

I'm a scientist so I find this stuff fascinating but I dunno about eating artificial meat made from a vegetable. That might be when genetic engineering has gone too far. What say you?

Re: Science is awesome. And creepy.

  • Umm this is way too creepy for me. A lot of people avoid soy like the plague- so the use of soy protein is not going to fly with some consumers- oh and they may need to use artificial growth hormones? No thank you. I am trying to avoid stuff like that the best that I can in meats that I buy.

    Just..yuck

  • On a scientific note it's kinda frustrating when science is this out there. Makes the mad scientist myth sound real :)

  • Definitely a little too far out there for me.  I do find it interesting to learn of what science is capable of creating, but at the same time feel like they could be using their time better than looking into this!  I guess on a surface level it would make the animal rights folks happy to have such an alternative, but looking a bit deeper wonder if it's worth it.
  • This seems a little bit creepy to me.  I don't eat meat but I wouldn't eat it or serve it to my family

Isn't this what we do already?  There are tons of vegetable based "fake meat" products out there.  I've yet to find any that are very delicious.  Then again, a lot of vegetarians don't eat meat because of it's grossness factor, so why would they want to eat vegetables disguised as meat? :)  Eating artificial meat made from animal tissue, though... ewwwwwww.

There may not be a choice one day- it's definitely not a sustainable practice.  People will probably either be eating bioengineered meat or be vegetarian.  Interesting article!

  • I guess I'm in the minority, but I'd try it! I think actual meat is grosser than test-tube meat really, though I still eat it happily.
  • I'd try it, yeah.
