White ink tattoos

Does anyone have one or have you seen one in person and if so what did you think?

Re: White ink tattoos

  • Honestly, they're crap. They WILL fade/turn an icky color.

  • My old co-worker had one (she's black, so she has pretty dark skin). I didn't really see the appeal. You could hardly see it (even on her dark skin), and it kind of just looked like something was wrong with her skin in that place.

I guess the idea of it is interesting, but I don't find it appealing.
  • I think they can be pretty, but often just look like scars to me.

I kind of like them, but I agree with the others - they look more like a scar than anything.

  • Paging @MagicInk!

I think it depends a lot on an individual's skin. I have (well, had) white in my tattoo, and it completely faded away within about 5 or 6 years while the rest of it looks fine. I know this isn't a problem with everyone though. Otherwise I like them, even if they do look like scars.

  • I really only like all-black tattoos.  Colored tattoos look cartoonish to me and the white ones look like scarring.

I believe it is a harder colour to get into the skin so they have to do it deeper, therefore more painful for the person being tattooed.  They glow under black lights, don't they?  I don't think I'd get one, but I like the ones that look like lace or something.

  • I had/have minor ones on my back. I have single point piercings and couldn't get them all done at once due to swelling and healing ability. The white was not visible as a tattoo, just looked like little scars.
  • Agreed with PPs. My ex-coworker had one and it just looked like she had scratched herself with a pin really badly. Not so attractive.
  • White in a tattoo or an all white tattoo? White in a tattoo as part of over all coloring/shading can look fine. I'm not a fan of all white tattoos for the most part. I'm of the opinion if you're going to pay for a tattoo and go through the pain of getting it, it should be something you can see.

They do glow under black light, the way a white t-shirt would. All tattoos fade with time, since white tattoos aren't as visible as say black, you don't see the fade as much. Think of a white t-shirt fading over time versus a black t-shirt. However, if your white tattoo fades because of being in the sun, it'll actually turn yellow.

A lot of people want that raised bumpy look from their white tattoos, that's what makes them cool. When I was in high school I knew a lot of people into "scarring", carving words/symbols into their skin and then let them heal to form a scar. Yes, it was as stupid as it sounds and yes it is a great way to get an infection. The raised bumpy look from a tattoo comes from the way your skin heals post tattoo. My friend has two tattoos and both have a raised bumpy feel because of how they healed. I did one another artist did the other and they both healed the same way. I've had multiple tattoos done by multiple artists and none of them have healed bumpy. So getting a white tattoo won't guarantee that raised bumpy scared look if that's what you're going for.

If you do get a white tattoo, first go to an artist that has done a lot of white tattoos and has experience. Second, go for something a little smaller. Third, make sure you get it in a place that won't get a ton of sun exposure and of course always try to cover it/put sun screen on it when you are in the sun. Actually that last one is a tip for anyone with any tattoo. The sun fades the ink in all tattoos. Sunscreen is your buddy.
  • Thank you ladies! FI was thinking about getting one and I told it probably wouldn't show up good. I personally like my tattoos black or colorful. I asked my friend who does my tattoos and he hasn't had anyone come in and ask him for an all white ink tat so he was no help.
  • I like them as a shade, and I think they are kind of cool with a white outline and a black shade, but I would never get an all white ink tattoo..my one that I have actually has white in it.

  • Yeah I have white in some of my tattoos. It is good to use for shading.
  • I also have some white shading in two of my tattoos and don't remember it hurting anymore than the other colors. They definitely are the first colors to begin fading, though.
  • I kind of want to get an all brown/sepia one rather than all black so it just looks like a really sweet birthmark. :)

My white only "hurt the most" because it was the last shade to go on, and my has color gradation (from black to white) so there were places white was the third time going over that spot and it hurt.

  • I'm currently in love with watercolor tattoos. I can't do them, but I'm going to find someone to teach me so that I can do them! And I also want to get one.

My next one is going to be watercolor hydrangeas under my collar bone.

SITB - This sounds awesome. I love the look of the white in doily type lace tattoos, but this sounds like a good alternative.

I love the watercolor tattoos too. I keep looking at them and the pin ups. I think my next one is going to be some sort of pin up.

I love the watercolor ones... I'm worried it might be the next thing Pinterest ruins for everybody (like it's already trying to ruin anchors and compass roses). :(

Fucking Pinterest. It ruined the infinity symbol!

Also I'm on Pinterest right now!

Ooh that never occurred to me.  I would love that.

I'm determined to get a watercolor tattoo when I save up the money for it.  I want to translate a quote into gallifreyan (Both for the reference, and just the fact that I think it is a really visually appealing way to do a quote- even if you didn't get the reference and I didn't tell you what the quote was, it would just look like a nifty pattern.)  and have watercolor in the background.  I'm debating several Firefly quotes, or something from Fahrenheit 451.
