I have to move before my dress comes in

I purchased my dress back in January for my October wedding. Since then my FI was offered an amazing job opportunity half way across the country. It was just too good to turn down and so now we have 3 months to move. I was told by the bridal salon that the dress will arrive late july or august. But we will be gone by then. Our wedding is also out of state (not where we are moving to, nor we live now)  near his family. I plan on talking to the bridal salon -- thankfully I got it at place with multiple locations, so having it delivered to a different store shouldn't be a problem (crossing my fingers).  If they can re-route the delivery, my choices are going to be deliver it to where we are moving (very far from wedding), send it close to his parents (near wedding), or deliver close to my mom (2 hr drive from wedding).

There are pros and cons to each situation: ability to get alterations done easily, but traveling to the wedding with the dress; or  traveling to get alterations done and not having to move the dress far at all.

I was just hoping for some help working through which option would be better. Have other people done any of these? What worked out for you? Thanks in advanced!

  • If it wouldn't be too hard for you to travel to his parent's home a few times before the wedding for alterations then I would send it there. I would want to have to travel as little as possible with my dress.

  • I would have the dress shipped to me so it could be altered.

  • Have the dress shipped to yourself once it arrives.  You will need to make a few appointments for alterations which will be easiest if the seamstress is near you.  If you are flying to wear your wedding will be, make the dress your carry on.  Most flight attendants will be happy to make sure your dress can either hand up in the first class closet or in a safe overhead bin.  At the most, you may need to have it steamed again once you arrive.

For seamstress recommendations, either ask the local board on TK.  Or have your FI ask some of his female co-workers.  When my normal seamstress was out of town for an extended vacation to her home country, I emailed the support staff at my office (mostly females) for recommendations.  The lady I ended up going with was so much better and beyond cheaper than the lady I originally went to!

  • I bought a first class one way ticket to get my dress to the destination, and then I have a regular ticket back home. I've read mixed things about airlines and them letting you hang vs. shove in overhead. I decided to not take any chances and booked on an airline that I know has hanging racks on the back wall in first class. I think this is the best way since you will have multiple fittings, but you'll only need to get the dress to the destination pre-wedding once. And worst case scenerio, you just have to have someone steam it at the destination to make sure it's nice.
