Cashing Checks before wedding?

My wedding is 3 weeks away and I received a card/check in the mail today.  It was someone invited, that can't attend the reception.  Do I wait until after the reception to cash it? what's proper etiquette?  send thank you immediately and cash immediately?

thanks!!  I will def get a thank you out asap.  I wasn't sure if I should cash the check or not, didn't want to seem rude cashing it, but also hate unbalanced check books if someone doesn't cash my check quickly!

It's not rude. It's a gift, and the person expects you to cash it and use it. There's nothing rude about cashing a check someone gave you.

We cashed checks right away, and we kept the money in my savings account. I wrote the amount in the spreadsheet I used to keep track of invitations and gifts. That way, if anything happened, I knew who to reimburse and how much to reimburse them.

I did cash a check received in advance of the wedding. It was from a close family member who couldn't attend and specifically said she wanted us to have the option of using the gift for wedding expenses. It was a large enough amount to be useful but small enough that if I had to, I could pay her back.
