Undergarments for trying on dresses? Help!

I posted this on the Attire board but wanted to see if any of you ladies were around to help me out :

So I'm going to try on dresses for the first time TODAY. and I just thought about what I'm going to be wearing underneath. I was going to wear a nude strapless bra and nude thong. Everything I'm Googling says NOT to wear a thong. What's the big deal? Am I going to horribly embarrass myself and the salesperson by wearing one? A lot of suggestions say to wear spanx. I don't own spanx as I've never had a reason to wear them.
Am I really that weird if I wear a thong?

Re: Undergarments for trying on dresses? Help!

  • I didn't wear a thong. I mean I guess the underneath could be scratchy but mine wasn't...

When I tried on at David's they made me try on using one of their longline bras so that wasn't even an issue. I think I just had a regular strapless for the other place I went to?

I would just go in whatever you feel comfy in :)
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • I wore spanx and a strapless bra.

The consultant will help you in and out of dresses.  Some stayed in the room with me while others stepped out while I pulled the dress up and they would then close up the back.  So if you're not comfortable with a complete stranger possibly seeing you in a thong, pick something a little more modest.

  • I wore a strapless bra and then they had me try on dresses with a long line bra. I wore spanx underneath, but it wasn't necessary.

  • I just wore a strapless bra & some non thong underwear though.  Have fun and show us pictures!!!

  • I wore the thong, that's what I'm more comfortable in. The girl stayed right outside the changing room though so she didn't even have to see my bum lol.
My MOH took pics on her phone and sent them to me but they haven't come through yet. I will update when I get them :)

  • I don't have very big boobs so I didn't use the strapless bra I brought to try on my dresses with. I brought a strapless push-up bra but all the dresses were clipped tightly so I really didn't need one.

As for underwear I brought white boy shorts for when I was having my fittings/ buying my dress. I wore "fancy" panties for H under my wedding dress the day of but my dress was a ballgown so I didn't even feel it on my rear end.
  • It's too late for this to help you now, but I wore spanx and a regular bra. I tucked the straps in when needed, or, like @southernpeach89, just didn't wear one at all.

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • This is interesting, I couldn't even wear a bra for most of the dresses I tried on, so the lady wasn't really in the room, just helping to zip afterward.  I did feel a little awkward when I found my dress and had to get measured and I was wearing a thong.

  • I hadn't thought about this yet, but I'm glad this thread surfaced.

Since I don't have big boobs, I may go braless. Do consultants find that weird or is that normal? I don't really own many strapless bras...probably should get on that. I'll also probably go non-thong underwear since I don't own spanx and I'm just uncomfortable in thongs.

  • I never wear thongs, but I wore one to my appts. because the first time I didn't and seeing my underwear through the dresses detracted from how they looked to me.  (If you're looking for poufy dresses, this won't be an issue).  I did wear a strapless bra, but they had me take it off pretty much right away.  A lot of dresses are lower in the back and just look weird with the bra sticking out.  For mine, the saleslady just waited outside while I put the dresses on, then helped with the back if needed afterward.

I might go braless with my dress...  I'm not sure yet but I don't know what else I can do besides having them sew in cups maybe?  I guess we'll see how it looks when it actually comes in in my size.

When I went to David's a couple of weeks ago (for the first time), I wore a nude strapless bra and nude boyshort underwear. The consultant was in the dressing room with me to get me into everything, since even the smallest sizes they had were not fitting without the clips. I opted to not use the longline bra, since I was already really warm with what I was wearing. Definitely post your pics!!!
  • i asked on the attire board too and some people think it's rude to wear a thong. i did put my question out there for opinions but now that i think about it i don't think it's rude if that's what you're comfortable in and plan on wearing under your dress for your wedding. the consultants are probably used to it.

i will get around to posting pics..maybe tomorrow. they're not too exciting and it's a pain getting them from my text messages to my email to the right format on my laptop lol

I can't wait to see some pictures! Did you try on any favorites?

FWIW, I wore a nude thong and nude strapless bra to some of my appointments too. At subsequent appointments I just wore regular nude or white underwear because I realized the salesperson might feel uncomfortable (silly since she probably sees girls in thongs every day). I don't think it really matters. I'll probably wear a thong under my dress the day of since that's what I wear nearly every day anyway.
