Re: Most inappropriate songs to request at reception & how do you 100% prevent them from being requested

  • I think people tend to read too much into song lyrics.  It is just a song.  If you don't like it then take that 3 minutes to get some fresh air.

Also, every wedding I have been to all songs that were played were the radio friendly versions, not the explicit versions.

  • I have blurred lines on my do not play list cause i thought it was rapey.

Of course, I've also left clubs/rooms cause some douche said something along the lines of "I know you want it" to me and I was all "yeah, no, I'll decide what I want and when I want it, KTHXBAI"

I think there's a big difference between a stranger saying it and your sexual partner saying it.

    Totally agreed

But looking the lyrics over, there isn't much to suggest it's between two sexual partners. It reads like trying to pick a girl up from the club. So, sure it's supposed to be about his ex-wife, but it sure as hell hasn't been interpreted as such by many people.

Trying to pick some one up at a club and being a pig about it and rape are two different things.

And there's just as many ppl that don't interpret the song that way.

It's fine if ppl don't like the song and find it controversial, there are a lot of songs that I don't like!

  • So, I don't really listen to that song or stations that play it and have mostly only heard snippets on commercials......but from the title I thought it was about cheating/being drunk? **blushes** I do like some rap and hip hop but I've been majorly country focused for the last couple years....OOPS!
  • One of the most inappropriate songs I've heard at a wedding wasn't vulgar at all.  A friend of mine got married last summer and her DJ played "If I Die Young" by The Band Perry.  A song about dying as a teen seemed like a choice out of left field.  He played a couple of break up songs that had me raising my eyebrows too, but that one took the cake!

  • I still do not being so offended at a song I would actually walk out of an event.    I've left the dance floor, got some fresh air, hit up the bar, but storm out?  Really?   If  really possible the couple had nothing to do with the song being played.

IDK, I find that to be a real over-the-top reaction over a song.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I wouldn't leave an event over that song, but I would definitely leave the dance floor, especially if it was at a club or something. That song can bring out some serious creeeeeeeep in people, so just for extra evasive maneuvers of creepers, I'd definitely use the time go take a break.

This.  I also just can't fathom being offended by a song.  Period.  As long as it has a good beat to dance to then I really couldn't give a shit what the words are.  Honestly, popular songs today have such horrible (meaning horribly written) lyrics that make zero sense that I kind of just laugh at how bad they are.

The DJ could always just play an instrumental version of it.

That would be the best way to go, Pharrell knows how to produce some gooooood dance songs.

If my DJ plays "Drunk in Love" he's fired. Immediately. There will be no "surfboarding" on the dance floor.

And my 12 year old future stepdaughter loves that song...and has no clue what the lyrics mean. And she sings along. And I cringe. And quickly change the radio station.

    I need a drink.

But typically with DJs you need to request special songs and I would think that musical versions of popular songs would need to be discussed prior to the wedding so your DJ has time to get them.  Also, if the couple doesn't find a song offensive then they wouldn't even think about having the DJ get a musical version of it.

In the end, if you are at a wedding and you do not like the song being played, you should take that time to get some fresh air or run to the bathroom.

I'm providing some remixes I like for my DJ. It's no big. Every time I've been at a club or a dance or whatever, if I don't like the song, it's time to take a break from dancing, and get another drink!

I hate that song just because i Think it sucks, but what is surfboarding?

The "surfboarding" part of the lyrics refers to having sex in a bathtub. A surfboard is made of wood. Thus, surfboard is a euphemism for a penis. Not in any way appropriate for a wedding.....or the radio station 12 year old girls like to listen to. I'm getting old. :(

That is seriously the dumbest shit I have ever heard of.

Oh and I hate that song too because it sucks so bad!

  • Here are some that are coming to my mind right now:

    - Major Lazer's "Bubble Butt"
    - Anything by Jon Lajoie
    - Akinyele's "Put it in My Mouth"
    - MC Hammer's "Pumps and a Bump"

I don't think I've ever heard this song, but... if you ride a penis the same way you ride a surfboard, you're doing it wrong.

Haha! You might want to explain that to Beyoncé!

  • I cannot imagine analyzing song lyrics and leaving an event because of how I interpret them.

  • Thought of another one.  Bloodhound Gang's "The Bad Touch".  Lol!  ;D
