Bubbles, bird seed, etc.

Hi Ladies,

The groom and I are having a discussion on when to blow the bubbles/throw the bird seed. I've been to a couple of weddings where the bubbles were blown as the couple left the church on the way to the reception, but I have been to more weddings where the bubbles were blown as the couple was leaving the reception on the way to their honeymoon. He thinks that they are always blown just after the ceremony when they leave the church. So after which (the ceremony or the reception) should that activity happen? Or does it really matter....?

I think that is a personal decision. We are placing a container of bubbles on each chair at the ceremony, so hopefully people get the hint that we would like for them to blow bubbles as we leave the ceremony. If not, well...I am not attaching a cute little poem or anything so that is the risk we take. Some people also use bubbles or sparklers or whatever as they leave the reception. Anyway, I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this these days.

  • We didn't do anything. Our ceremony and reception were the same place, and we left the reception with our friends on the same shuttle. So we didn't do any grand exit.

I think you can do either way, I've seen more as end of the reception though!
  • I've only ever seen it as they were leaving the church, never the reception. Every wedding I've seen, the vast majority of the guests left the reception before the bride and groom.

  • I would recommend bubbles over birdseed. Birdseed gets *everywhere* - in your hair, in your dress, in your veil - and it can hurt when it hits your face. (Some people think it's funny to throw it as hard as they can, especially kids.)

My cousin said they got into the hot tub in their hotel that night, and there was birdseed floating in the water because it had come out of her hair.
  • Oh who was it that had that pic of her and her husband getting pelted with birdseed? Is she still around?
I prefer bubbles, but supposedly some of them can stain. I'd be worried about the soap getting in eyes, but that might be me over worrying too much lol.

We did bubbles as we left the church. One of my favourite photos is of us through the cloud of bubbles.

ETA: My 2.5-year-old nephew LOVED handing out the bubbles, and playing with them, and I let him keep all the extra bubble containers and he thought that was pretty great, too.

You can do either, just after the ceremony or as a grand exit when leaving the reception.

  • We did it after the ceremony. We didn't plan to leave the reception until the end of the night at 11:30 PM and weren't sure how many people would still be around at that point. By that point we only had about 1/4 of our guests left.

So much this. My friend used birdseed and I still, 3 years later, find bits of it in the pocket of the coat that I wore to that wedding. The bride was picking it out of her hair for days (maybe an exaggeration, but not much of one).

  • We are placing them on the seats as well for right after the ceremony. We have bride and groom bubbles, for about 2/3 of the seats, and then some little pouches of confetti for the rest. I think this is way better than birdseed because it definitely won't hurt, and I wouldn't really mind having a few tiny paper hearts in my hair. Also, we have the bubbles already to test out and if it's a problem we plan to just replace the liquid with kid-friendly bubbles that can get in your eyes, etc without causing any harm.
