Is This a Thing Now? (NWR)

Last night, I noticed a notification on my FB that I was tagged in a post. In the post is one of my BMs wearing a bikini and challenging a bunch of her friends to jump into a body of water within 24 hours. If not we had to donate $100 to a certain charity (one that I don't support).

As I scroll through FB I see FOUR of these videos...

Please tell me this is just my group of friends, or if this is a new way to shame people into donating money for charity?

  • It's the new viral thing, like the cinnamon challenge previously.  I can't imagine any adult would actually take something like that seriously and donate money to a charity for not doing something they never agreed to in the first place.
  • Yikes. I thankfully haven't seen this.
  • I actually just saw this on the news.  The problem is some people are diving into freezing water and getting seriously injured and I guess there is one case of death.  It astounds me how people can be such lemmings and completely incapable of individual thought.  Ignore those posts and move on.  You don't have to do anything you don't  want to.  Its FB for crying out loud.

That has not shown up on my feed yet.  I have been fairly lucky with my Facebook feed, no one even posts Go Fund Me requests. The worst thing I see on my feed is Yankee fan posts.

  • It never ceases to amaze me how blindly people will follow a fad/trend/activity. I fear that independent thought & reasoning are dead.

  • I've seen this but it didn't have any charity attached to it so I just thought it was stupid college kids jumping into freezing water for fun.
  • I would "jump" into my nice, warm jacuzzi tub with bubbles.

What the hell does jumping into water have to do with supporting a charity? What if you DO do it? Thanks for not supporting the charity, you bitch. No soul.

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I just put on the post "I don't donate to charity".

  • There was a teen death in Minnesota due to this over the past week and someone else was charged with something after jumping off of a bridge.

Authorities are warning against it due to water temps being in the 40's still and the obvious danger it all poses.

I wouldn't jump into cold water even if I WAS the charity receiving all the money! My ass stays in hot water! (HA! This is true for other things too!!) ;)

I've had about a million "Cold Water Challenges" posted in my FB newsfeed the past couple of weeks.  Apparently, if you are challenged, you have to jump into cold water or have cold water sprayed on you. If you don't accept the challenge you have to pay the person's (who challenges you) church (or their charity of choice) $100 and if you do accept it, you record your cold water challenge, challenge someone else, and you pay $10 to your charity of choice.

...I dont understand the fascination.  I personally think its stupid.

  • My FI got tagged in one of those things, but it wasn't a charity deal. Just 'If you don't do it you're a big weenie' kind of thing. It was also still extremely cold and the water was still mostly frozen.

He and his buddy ran into the water, dunked themselves, and ran directly back to the still-running and HEAT ON HIGH truck. They didn't jump off a dock or bridge or anything, just ran into the water where some the of the ice melted off.

I made sure they were very well-prepared for this dumbass stunt. I also recorded it for them.

  • Well hell, it's going to be 90 degrees here today.  Jumping into a refreshing body of water actually sounds like a fabulous idea (or at least it would if I weren't planning on sleeping all afternoon since I didn't go to bed last night).  Too bad I'm not at my sister's house and could take advantage of her pool...

So we are taking advantage of men. :( because they of course don't want to be seen as a wimp. I feel so many guys fall prey to this because of their man complex.

  • Their friend tagged them, and like 3 other people, so they did the same. They were all pretty equal about calling out male AND female friends, it really all just depended on whichever they have more of. FI called out FSIL and his female cousin, in addition to two male friends.

One of the girls that got tagged by somebody else did the smart thing and jumped into a heated indoor pool lol

  • GAH.  I have not seen this and I'm glad.

It's dumb enough to post about silly stunts like this, but that sort of stuff has been going on forever (you're a big weenie if you don't do it!  I dare you!)  The charity element puts a bad taste in my mouth.  So you get tagged without any warning, you may or may not support the charity... and you're just expected to play along?  Nopenopenope.

  • Sounds like some 15 year old boy's evil genius ploy to see a bunch of girls nipping out of their bikinis. Well played.

  • I certainly snatch up any opportunity to plunge myself into freezing water. Seriously, goosebumps, frozen hair, and blue lips are SOO my look. Very Kate Winslet in Titanic...

  • This has popped up on my newsfeed, thankfully it's not anyone who would tag me! I wouldn't take it seriously though if I was. No thank you

  • Yes, it's the "new" thing.

Three different people have tagged me and "challenged" me to do it, and I have declined each time. If I want to donate to charity, then I'll do it without jumping into some cold water.
