Number of Dresses

Just wondering.  How many is TOO many dresses to try on?  What were your experiences?  On Say Yes to the Dress, they say that you can try on too many.  What do you guys think?  I've tried on about 12, which I know isn't a large number.  I really liked two of them, however they both had issues with them that I really didn't like.  I really want a corset back, and one of them was a zip-up.  The other had three tiers and I didn't like that each layer was asymetrical and edged in that stiff horsehair seam.  They were both completely different, however.  Their only similarities were A-line and Ivory.  Thoughts?

Re: Number of Dresses

  • You can definitely over shop but as far as how many is too many, well that is a person to person thing.

For the dress that you liked and had a zip up back, did you ask if it could also come in a corset back? I know the dress I had could either be a zip up or a corset back.  Also, most dresses can be made into a corset back if you really want that look, just consult with the seamstress on site before you make any decisions.

  • See, that is my worry.  The dress shop with that particular dress said that it did not come with a corset back, but that their seamstress could do it.  Unfortunately, that shop has a reputation for doing terrible alterations.  :(

You don't have to use the shop for alterations.  You could show pictures of the dress to another seamstress that you trust and ask them for their opinion.

  • Find a seamstress you can trust that has a lots of experience with wedding dresses. I bought a zipper back dress and had it converted to a corset back. It wasn't cheap, I think about $150.00, but to me it was worth every penny.

  • Around where I am having a zipper back converted to a corset back is in the $75-180 range depending on seamstress.

I tried on around 50 dresses before I came to my final decision.  I was to the point where I just wanted to find the dress and be done with it.  I had problems finding one I was comfortable in.

From what you're saying, it doesn't sound like you're sold on either of the dresses.  I would continue to look.

  • I'm around the same number as @Dignity100 . Even after the first appt or so, I kept trying on a bunch of different styles rather than finding a style that works for me which I think was my biggest mistake and led to my dress regret.

Op- I would keep looking if you're not sold on either style but maybe if you have pics, pay attention to what you liked and didn't like about ALL of the dresses you tried on.
  • I only tried about 7 or 8. Knew I wanted a fitted silhouette, ivory, and lace, so that was all I tried on. Still left me a few options of fit & flare, sheath, and mermaid, crochet or chantilly lace, ivory or champagne, but it was easy to narrow down and when I found one that looked good, I pulled the trigger and stopped trying on more.

Now, that's not to say I didn't have a few minor panics afterward, but in the end I don't regret my choice. There might be one that looks "better" but I don't care. Mine is gonna look great. It'll be perfect because I'm getting married in it, not because it has every detail I ever dreamed of.

I'm with Lolo. I tried on about 7 or 8 dresses at one place. My circumstances of dress shopping were different. I had not idea what I really wanted (ended up with the complete opposite of what I thought I wanted, actually). I am horribly indecisive, so less choices for me is better. Tried on 7 or 8, really liked 5 of them, narrowed it down to 2... And then bit the bullet and picked one! (ETA, stupid iPad)
  • I tried on maybe 10. I really thought I wanted a ballgown with straps but after four or five ballgowns that were all just kind of ok, the consultant put me in a trumpet with straps and I swooned. I tried on a couple more trumpets to make sure that was the one and I didn't just like that shape better, but then I put it on again and was done.
