Do you wear your ring while travelling?

Re: Do you wear your ring while travelling?

  • I travel all over the world. I usually wear my rings and if I feel we're in an area that is somewhat unsafe, I flip my diamond toward my palm. FWIW- both my e-ring and band are eternity bands and I have a somewhat sizeable diamond and I still wear them. I do not wear them when I sleep, shower, or work out at the gym. However, I really responded because I have to have another biopsy this week and can't wear my rings. So, I am just bummed about all of that. Lol
boo on the biopsy.  Hope it comes out okay.

I wear my rings everywhere too.   I think the average American traveler should not have any problems wearing their rings while traveling.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I take mine off when mixing anything with my hands (meat loaf, kneading dough), when I'm handling rocks or chunks of metal that could scratch it and occasionally while washing dishes.

I also don't have a big ring. I have a row of flush-set diamonds, so I don't really have to worry about one falling out or off, at least not as much as someone with a higher setting.
  • I wear mine when traveling, but I totally get why people don't.  I live in a major city and am used to being aware of my surroundings/flipping my ring in certain areas/on the subway, but my experience isn't universal.  Obviously if you're used to life in suburbia, a big city or foreign country is going to be scarier.  And you're more likely to look like a tourist.

It's a fact that you're more likely to get mugged/stolen from while traveling.  It has nothing to do with one place being more dangerous than another and everything to do with you being unfamiliar with your surroundings and "bad guys" targeting the fish out of water.  I don't think it's silly or unreasonable for someone to not want to draw extra attention to themselves, especially if they have a flashier ring.

That said, I know some people who travel a lot and don't travel with their rings or travel with fake ones.  It has nothing to do with worrying about it being stolen, they are scared they'll forget it behind.  It's just that when you're on the road, you don't have your normal routines and are more likely to forget your ring somewhere.
Don't worry guys, I have the Wedding Police AND the Whambulance on speed dial!

  • Echo many of the PPs.  I love to cook so my FI specifically picked a platinum and diamond low profile three stone setting for my engagement ring so I wouldn't end up catching it or banging it up on pots/pans and the like.  I wear it 99.9% of the time (exceptions cooking really sticky/messy stuff - stuffing thanksgiving turkey, cookie dough and/or cleaning with harsh chemicals).  Mine is insured through the jewelry store and homeowners policy so no worries there either.

I will add that the jewelry store where he bought my ring does have a few signs warning folks with yellow gold bands to avoid swimming where the water has been treated with chlorine - I guess there is a chemical reaction between the two that can significantly weaken the metal.  So I'd consult the jeweler for their opinion.

  • I generally wear mine all of the time except when I am home. I have a routine of taking it off as soon as I get home from work and putting it on as I am getting ready. I still need to insure mine, but I figure that I will do that next month when Fiance and I buy are wedding bands so I can do it all at once. The only time I have opted out of wearing mine was when Fiance and I went to Riot Fest in Chicago. We are getting married in Jamaica and will have to bring the bands with us but I figure we will wear them then as well. As long as they fit well there should not be a problem.

  • FI and I do a lot of rock climbing.  The first time we went after getting engaged, I didn't even think about my ring...until about halfway up a pitch and I had crammed my fingers into a tiiiiiny crevice and wasn't sure I was able to get them out without ripping it off.

There was a very panicked slothiegal 30 feet in the air yelling down to FI, "OMG GET READY TO CATCH MY RING."

I learned my lesson and haven't climbed with it since ;)

I only take mine off for messy kitchen work. I work in healthcare, ride horses, go surfing, work out, shower... I figure that's why they're usually diamonds. They're tough. And I lose things, so pretty much no matter what I'm doing it's safest on my finger where it can't magically grow legs and disappear. I wouldn't think twice about traveling with it- it's pretty and I love it and all, but it doesn't scream I'M WORTH A BAJILLION DOLLARS.

  • If anybody wants to get my engagement ring they will have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands.

No idea why anybody would want to steal a sterling silver ring, though.

  • I guess for me, when I am going somewhere, whether that be close to home in the city or far away on a vacation I know to keep my eyes open and be aware of my surroundings.  Other then that there is not much you can do to keep yourself safe (unless you just don't go anywhere, ever) so you just need to live and wear and do what you want to do.
I agree with this. I lived abroad for quite some time and though I was not engaged at that time, I always remained aware of my surroundings and not once had any problems, regardless of the country.

And to answer the OP: I just got engaged on 5/31/14 so I haven't had too much time to wear it yet... :) but so far the only times I have taken it off are to clean it for 2 minutes a day in a blue solution that the jeweler gave us, and when I am at the gym. I lift heavy weights using an olympic barbell with knurls on it, and would never want the steel bar to chew up my beautiful ring.
  • The only times my ring is off is chemicals, raw meat, work (I'm a nurse and don't want anything to happen to it at work plus the whole germ aspect) and at the gym so the weights don't ruin it and saw a video of a guy deadlift with a wedding ring on and the outcome wasn't pretty. Otherwise I wear it all the time as I believe it's meant to :)
