Re: Yeah...so this just happened...

  • As a northern transplant to a southern state. . . To a northern state. . . To a southern state. . . To a northern state. . . This is bullshit.
  • I just can't even picture the logistics of that.

So, after the meal the waiters come around and bring everyone their own individual checks, or does each table get a bill? Or do you pay up front when you enter the reception? Can guests pay by credit card, or cash only? How long will all of this take for everyone to pay? I picture long lines at the cash register and lots of angry guests.

    Just... no.
  • But that's what all my friends do, and that's what done where I'm from. So no one thinks it's rude, which makes it perfectly fine, right?

    Oh hell no

ETA: As a northern transplant to a southern state I will admit what people think is polite does vary regionally. But bless her heart if she thinks this shit show is how you throw a wedding anywhere in the country.

Friend just received a wedding invitation that included not only the registry info and cash bar info, but...

A menu that listed meals available for purchase, prices, as well as tax and mandatory 18% gratuity.  Plus the admission fee to the aquarium the reception is held at.

It's also an in-law so she has to attend. I will absolutely share the report on the shitshow that happens later.

Said person is also a transplant to a northern state from a southern state, and frequently gets snarky with my friend about the 'lack of manners up here'.

FFS what are they actually hosting?? What an etiquette nightmare. Nightmare. Metal rooster, if anything.
That is what I was wondering. what the hell are they actually paying for?!? I would totally skip this wedding. How horrible!

What.the.fuck. You really have to wonder how these people have gotten through life with such an utter lack of social awareness. How can anyone think it is okay to pull this crap?

  • Please tell me your friend RSVPd with a quoted estimate for all costs associated with attending the wedding, including travel, hotels, attire, childcare, meals, and full beauty treatments.
  • What the actual fuck? So you pay for your meal AND pay a cover charge? What new circle of hell is this?!

  • Bad news. Said wedding is in Texas. Friend is in the northeast US and will not be able to attend.

I really hope weddings fall under the jurisdiction of  Don't Mess with Texas.  Cause Texas could easily lose their ever loving shit all over that wedding. I live close enough to Texas to know that you just don't do that kind of thing there.
  • I am with @lyndausvi‌ what venue would actually agree to this?! I am in the hotel events industry for work and we have ppl with business meetings want to do this sometimes. We always say no. In addition to the logistical nightmare of it all...there is no guarantee people won't just come and not eat.

My chef husband was like WTF?   An a la carte dinner for a wedding?  Hell to the NO

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I wonder if the bride expects her guests to select an entree choice and than provide payment along with their rsvp. I just don't see how folks would pay the day of unless it was an extremely intimate wedding although with a mandatory 18% gratuity it can't be that small.

Honestly, until I came to this board I didn't know what a cash bar was or that guests were ever expected to pay for their meals. I really thought a cash bar was when they place a tip jar for guests to tip. That is how clueless I am.

Never heard of, or been to such an atrocity--that is just beyond rude! And I'm a born and bred Masshole ;-)

Holy shit. I bet they not only have a honeyfund, but something similar that's for paying for her dress, their admission price and dinner, their officiant... and well I can't really think of anything they spent money on since they passed it all onto their guests.

I'm in Texas, I'm from one of the larger cities, and currently live in another; I went to school in a small town in Texas... this would not fly with anyone I know. There are no groups of people that I have ever associated with that would be okay with this.

I'm very upset that she is giving us such a bad name when we seem to do that quite well having let Rick Perry keep running the place!
  • I'm in CA and in my family cash bars abound! One thing my family does right , however, is providing lots of good food! There is no way having guests pay for their food at a wedding would fly in my family.
