  • @ClimbingBrideNY I almost made FI go with me. I was effing terrified the first time I went to the dentist again after so long. My blood pressure was so high I thought I was going to pass out. And it was just for a cleaning! I didn't enjoy hearing that I had 6 cavities but at the end of the appointment I at least felt better knowing what the status was. Each time I've gone I've gotten a little more comfortable and I'm not quite as scared. The key is just to find a dentist that you're very comfortable with and that will put you at ease.

Ugh. FI promised I will like his dentist. I used to go to the dentist every 6 months. Then I found out that my dentist was doing unnecessary work on me to get money from insurance! He filled 5 cavities. I never had any. He also did a root canal on me that I didn't need. That whole experience traumatized me.
  • See, my anti-dentist attitude isn't because I'm scared to go (I honestly don't mind them), rather my pocket book is scared shitless. I have bad teeth. Always have, always will. Have been a 2xday brusher since I was little and I'm an obsessive flosser. Doesn't matter. I can go to the dentist every 6 months or every 3 years - I'll still have cavities &/or need a root canal. Never fails. The dentist around the corner from my house is offering free teeth whitening for new clients so I might make an appointment just to jump on that. Pearly whites for the wedding would be nice.

That stinks about your dentist! Not surprisingly, I've seen it happen before (I work in insurance) and I can understand completely why you're traumatized. I would be too. If for some reason you don't end up liking the dentist your FI goes to, you should try looking on something like Angie's List so you can get a feel for who's good and who's not based on reviews. FI assured me that I'd like his dentist and luckily I do. I gave them a shout out on facebook after my last two cavities were filled last week and one of the hygienists called FI to get my work address to send me flowers. Talk about great service!

I get phone calls from my dentist when it is time for an appointment.  I have a good dentist that I go a few hours away to see and I guess I go every 6 months or however long they say you should go.  Just reading the PPs about not going to the dentist in years gets me nervous.  You need to go.

  • So I'm a hygienist and I know this makes me a big dork - but I find it so interesting reading everyones stories and experiences.

I'm sorry for anyone who has had bad experiences or is nervous about going after a long time absence - please talk to your friends and find out who loves their dentist and see if they are accepting new patients. In my experience the small privately owned offices tend to do really honest work and have a very high priority on patient satisfaction as opposed to production (I know it sounds harsh - but some (mostly corporate) offices see dentistry as more of a business than anything - and thats unfortunate). Working in the field - we know it is something people are nervous about - and there are things that can be done to help ease the anxiety; a lot of offices offer some form of sedation for any fillings/extractions/root canals ect. if needed.

Anyway - I know I'm a nerd, but feel like I need to say that infections in your mouth can lead to other complications within your body - so please keep yourselves healthy and go to the dentist!!

  • All my doctors/dentists are electronic now too. My dentist used to make you write out your own appointment reminder, but now they email, text and call. I got it, don't worry I put it in my calender when I made the appointment.

I have nothing to add to the actual question, but, when reading through the thread and seeing this comment, I automatically thought about a robot cleaning my teeth. Haha! Is it time to go home yet?

There's nothing more personal and thoughtful than a handwritten letter with a personally addressed envelope. These people took the time to come to your wedding and probably even give you a decent wedding gift. The LEAST you can do is the address the envelopes yourself. Its takes what...and extra 30 seconds to address an envelope after writing a letter? Especially since you will already have the addresses.
I'm considering addressing the thank you envelopes at the same time I address the invitations. I'll have the list out and be in writing mode, so might as well. They'll be ready to go then when it's time to write the notes. I have extras so it won't be a huge waste if someone doesn't end up bringing a gift.
I've been doing this!  I guarantee my post-wedding self will love my current self for doing this.  I already have about a third of our invites done, as well as thank you envelopes.  And if people don't bring a gift, ehh it's just an envelope.
I would have wasted a ton of envelopes if I had done this.  In fact I would have ended up ordering more thank you notes/envelopes to do that.  We had less than 50% attendance and only 2 people who didn't attend sent gifts.

Personally, I hate the text message and e-mail reminders.  Please just call me.
