Help with paint?

Morning Ladies!

BF and I are going to be painting this weekend. In the bathroom, he had said all along that all he wanted was a "blue bathroom." So we picked out blue paint samples and put two on the wall in two separate 3x3 sections. We did come to the conclusion that with our decorations, blue would be too much. We are thinking of sticking with the pale yellow that is in their currently. 

The previous homeowners left the paint swatches so we can go to HD or Lowes to pick up a small amount of paint. However, we are going to need cover up the darker blue. For those of you who have experience with this, if we sand it down, prime and then paint do you think that would be okay? Or should we do something else? If it can't be corrected we could maybe find a picture to cover it on the wall?

YES SAND IT DOWN! This almost caused World War III in our home. I wanted to paint our living room grey and had a million paint samples on the wall. Finally when I found the right shade, I told FI to sand the samples down, and then we'll prime. He said it was fine. After the first coat of pain, you could see where the samples were. Not so much the color, but the texture.

If you can, buy a paint that has primer in it as well as primer, that worked out really well in our living room, and made the whole process a breeze.

Agreed with @buddysmom80! Don't go cheap on the paint. It makes a HUGE difference when you buy a nicer brand that already has primer in the paint.

Yes, don't go cheap, I learned the hard way. I LOVE Behr paint and primer in one, I bought Valspar and hated it, and it was a little bit cheaper than Behr but it really made a difference.

Yes I think you'll have to sand it (maybe), prime it (definitely), and 2 coats of paint.  I would do the whole room while you're at it, so you don't need to try to match and paint fades over time anyway I think. 

I didn't prime my last bedroom, and you can still see the texture of the samples, but not in the other rooms where I did prime.

You can also get at home depot now, which I did for the kitchen (last painted) big stickers that you can put the paint sample on and stick on the wall, instead of painting swatches!

Taking it from someone who didn't sand, the sanding is not a maybe, it should be 100% done.

Also another trick I learned (after the fact!!!) was to buy poster board, paint your sample on that and hang it up on the wall.

Thanks ladies, I clearly should have come here BEFORE painting these swatches on the wall. For the master and kitchen we will be getting the paint with primer in one. However for the bathroom since we don't need much, (we could probably do the whole thing with the small sample can as the bottom half is bead board) so we would get a stand alone primer. I don't think they can do the paint and primer in one with the small samples? 

The paint is Behr @buddysmom80, so glad to hear that you liked that brand. The samples are valspar I believe though.

@caseface5 I think you might want to buy at least a quart to maybe even a gallon because you'll probably want to do two coats of paint. I don't think the sample can is gonna cut it....unless your samples are quart size? The samples I've always been given are like itty bitty.

Completely unrelated to how to paint over samples, but if dark blue is too much and you aren't a huge fan of the light yellow, I'd go with a light slate gray or something. Our bathroom is yellow right now and I loathe it.

@phira I hate yellow. Our master bedroom and bathroom were both painted a flat yellow when we bought our house. I had both rooms painted less than a week after we closed on the house...I hated it that much. I actually really like the light slate gray idea. It sounds like a very cool and soothing color!

Thanks @Phira! We are actually doing a light grey in the master. We don't necessarily love the yellow, but we don't hate it either. It's something we feel we can deal with for a while without getting sick of it. So basically we are looking for a short term fix. I don't know how short term, but something to cover up those two spots until we decide what color we want in there.

@lapeanut1018 omg with the yellow hate!  I feel ya.  I have such a hard time taking yellow, orange, or green houses seriously because uh, yelllllllllow undertones.  And I mean, you're close enough to FL, so you know that half the houses here are yellow...

And yes, yes, I know we can paint (isn't that what @caseface5 is doing? duh) - there are other issues with these houses too.  namely school district and/or too small of a backyard because we are picky as heck.

I'm also kinda terrified that I'm going to buy a house and a sinkhole's going to open up to it the next day.  <--wedding nightmares pt. 2: the house buying nightmares haha
