Favorite covers of songs

I'm bored and I'm sitting here listening to music so I thought I'd ask. What is you favorite cover and do you think it is better than the original.

I have a tie. My first is "Hallelujah". The Leonard Cohen version (original) is nice but the Jeff Buckley cover is perfection. As far as I'm concerned after Buckley did it no one else should ever touch the song.

Number two is "The Man Who Sold the World". I much prefer the Nirvana version to the David Bowie one. Yes I know it is David Bowie's song but honestly I find his version creepy. That could be because I feel there is only one thing on this planet scarier than David Bowie and that is clowns. Lol. Really though I think Kurt Cobain added much more feeling to the song. Also in general I don't like it when an artist take some beautiful lyrics and a great melody and complicate with too many instruments or synth. This song is pretty enough to not need the extras.

Re: Favorite covers of songs

  • I agree with you on both counts.

I love the Sundays' cover of Wild Horses.

Have you heard K.D. Lang's Hallelujah? It is brilliant! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_NpxTWbovE

That's what I was going to say! Although I'm a huge Rolling Stones fan...

I love Florence and the Machine's version of Addicted to Love and Stone Temple Pilot's Dancing Days. I'm kind of a sucker for covers.

  • New York, New York by Reel Big Fish! I also love the Sinatra version though.

    I am too!

I also like the Aerosmith version of "Come Together". I can't say it is better than the original but it is still good.

@shrekspeare I don't think I've heard a version of "Love Song" that I don't like. That song is just great.

YES to the Rufus Wainwright "Hallelujah." Love that. (WHY YOU NO LIKE PARAGRAPHS, TK?!) This chick killed "All of Me" so much harder than John Legend. https://www.youtube.com/watch/?v=q0UB26bLbfk

Adele - To Make You Feel My Love

I like her version of Love Song, too, but I am such a major The Cure fan that I can't love it as much as the original. I just can't.

  • Under Pressure, The Used and My Chemical Romance.

Yes, Bowie/Queen original is perfect. But the The Used and My Chem did a fantastic job.
  • I'm feeling very old school - of most of the songs mentioned, I prefer the originals.

All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix owns this Bob Dylan song
Make you feel my love - Adele

  • Laugh at me if you want but I love Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal". It take some serious musical balls to cover anything by Michael Jackson.
  • I agree with all of these!

I'm a huge fan of "Gin & Juice" by DMB and "blackbird" by Sarah McLachlan.

I will second (third?) Rufus Rainwright's Hallelujah

How has no one mentioned Johnny Cash's version of Hurt originally by NIN?!?!?!?! If you haven't seen it, watch the video HERE. Seriously AMAZING.

ETA: Also, I love Mad World by Gary Jules (as seen in Donnie Darko). That was originally Tears For Fears

Those are both amazing! I only learned "Mad World" was a cover recently!

  • You all stole my favorite two: "Mad World" and "Hallelujah". Jeff Buckley nailed it, but K.D. Lang is good and still better than the origional

On a side note, I love the original "I'm a believer" by the Monkees over the cover by Smash mouth, but I'm a sucker for the Monkees.

  • 5GDP has House of the Rising Sun out now. Can't decide if I like it or not.

Nightwish Over The Hills And Far Away. And Marco and Tarja's voices worked nicely for Phantom of the Opera.

Apocalyptica has so many impressive covers.

John 5's cover of Beat It is better to me than MJ.

For further baffling music choices, I'd sooner jam ice picks in my ears than hear Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. But that's more because argh, people claim it's not a cover, that Reznor covered Cash.

Another vote for Rufus Wainwright's cover of Hallelujah. He's performed a few other Leonard Cohen covers that are remarkably good.
  • Lorde-Everybody Wants to Rule the World

    Marilyn Manson-Sweet Dreams/Personal Jesus
    Adele-Love Song
Rufus Wainwright-Hallelujah (the one in Shrek)
    5 Finger Death Punch-Bad Company
    Birdy-Skinny Love
    Emily Browning-Asleep (Sucker Punch Soundtrack)

ETA: Also, LDR's version of Once Upon a Dream. I have a serious Sleeping Beauty obsession (evident by my large tattoo), and have by dying over it since it was released.
@shrekspeare LDR did a cover of Heart Shaped Box and I am obseeeesssed
