Grrrr Facebook

My partner J was repeatedly logged out of Facebook all week, no explanation. Every time it happened, he would have to go through security steps to log back in.

Tonight, he somehow failed the security check, even though he entered in the correct password and other info (he thinks he failed the CAPTCHA, which, don't even get me started on CAPTCHA). Facebook still let him log back in, but blocked "certain features" on the site.

Certain features like ... posting on any wall except his own (including groups), liking anything, commenting on any posts (including his own posts), and sending messages. Besides browsing his newsfeed, he comments on stuff all the time; he's involved in a bunch of private groups with lots of "internet friends" (basically like user-created private forums), and he's was running a massive game of Nomic (thank goodness he was able to transfer admin privileges to someone else because otherwise the game would have had to stop for 30 days).

Reporting the problem is pointless because Facebook only wants feedback and doesn't address individual complaints. A week ago, I knew someone who worked at Facebook and might have been able to pull some strings, but he's now my sister's ex-boyfriend so ... not happening.

So J is off Facebook for a month and in solidarity, I'm off for a month, too. I thought, "Yay, I'll be more productive!" before I remembered that I spent a lot more time on TK than I ever did on Facebook ...

Anyone else experience this "lovely" Facebook problem?

Re: Grrrr Facebook

  • Can't say that's ever happened to me, but I'd be a lot more productive if it did.
  • I've never heard of that happening.  FI sends me things on FB all the time, so that would suck. But, I would definitely get more accomplished.  Having the FB app means I'm not always on my computer, but I'm always checking my phone!  :/    lol

  • Ugh that would be so frustrating. I've never heard of anything like that, but I do think those Captcha things are pretty dumb. I did spend a lot more time on fbook before I joined TK, for sure. Plus, it's better that I'm sharing every little accomplishment on here, rather than fbook.

It sounds possibly like his account was flagged for some reason? Although I think they notify you by email when that happens so maybe not. That does suck, though :(

  • No, but I'm so sorry it happened to J. :(

Eek--what happened that locked you out for a day? But yeah, we were shocked at the level of severity of the punishment (for what? We're not even sure still). Like ... you DO know if you don't let him use Facebook for a month, he might learn he can live without it?

Is it possible that someone else using your same IP address is abusing Facebook's TOS? I could be wrong but I think they flag IP addresses and lock them out if they suspect suspicious behavior from the IP address.

Just asked J. He doesn't think so, only because Facebook told him it was blocking him from certain features because he'd failed the security check, not because he was violating TOS. Although maybe that could explain why they were doing the security check?

I've heard of someone having that happen to them, but I don't remember what all went on. I do think it was the captcha though. I swear I'm not a robot and I fail those all the time. Mostly because they don't look like whatever letter/number/whatever they're trying to get you to type.

Forgot my password and lost access to the email I'd signed up with.
