Very expensive dress mistake.....

So, I have a dilemma. I went bridal dress shopping some time ago. Mentally discarded all options either due to price or thought they were too froo froo for my Vegas wedding. I ended up buying a $695 column gown from a department store which I think is beautiful but never got excited about. I figured I would dress it up with accesories and figured I wasnt going to have the teary dress moment anyway. Also bought a 2nd short retro reception dress. Same ambivialent feeling for the most part. Anyway, today I went Davids Bridal to get a new second dress (because I wasn't feeling bridal enough) in my first second dress. Fell in love with another main bridal dress too!! Came home and tried on the original and comparing the pics side by side, there is just no comparison. New dress is actually comparably reasonable compared to what some spend, $948. My fiance is telling me to just buy it but I just feel terrible about making such an expensive mistake with the first dress (past return date). What should I do?! We are certainly not made of money and everything else is costing more than we budgeted. How do I mentally justify this? I have always been a frugal and sometimes cheap person. Oh, and I bought a new 2nd dress while I was there. Thanks!

Re: Very expensive dress mistake.....

  • Maybe you should stop looking for dresses. You have 75 from what it sounds like lol

Resell any that you aren't going to wear. If you can make that happen, peruse a little more, but don't haul off and buy it right away.

  • Oh....I am definently done shopping for dresses. Lol! I am canceling my BHLDN appointment which I waited 2 months for. Has anyone resold a wedding dress before and if so, how long does it typically take?

  • Sell the dress.  You can get 75% of your money back, and you'll be happy at your wedding.

  • I'd sell the dress. There's a section on here for selling things, I personally like selling & buying evening gowns off eBay, and you can also look for consignment shops in your area.
  • Wow I hadn't thought about consignment shops! Thanks @OnceUponAVine‌ ! Thats a great tip!

  • You're welcome!
  • I did the same thing, but I LOVE my new dress and was able to easily return my old dress even though they said no returns and I bought it thinking they wouldn't.

  • I sold a couple wedding items on tradesy.com and both took about two weeks. It's free to list. Once you sell an item, they take 9%. I think preownedweddingdresses.com is another popular option.
  • It's unlikely that you'll get 75% of what you paid for it. Plan on closer to 50% .
  • I'd try to take it to the department store first (assuming all tags are on and you have the original receipt), worst they can do is say 'no'.  When I worked at a clothing store, the regular sales clerk couldn't usually do a return past the date, but managers could - so it was always up to the manager's discretion (usually a happy customer was better than a mad one).

  • I went back and checked the receipt. I actually bought it from shopbop on April 1 so I am just slightly over the deadline. I bought so many dresses I coulnt remember where this one was from. Anyway, I am going to call them and see what they can do. Thanks ladies!

I'd actually go into the store - it's harder to tell a person 'no' to their face than over the phone.

  • @Dignity100‌ I agree with you but unfortunately shop bop is an online only retailer, amazons upscale clothes store essentially
