men - what kind of tie to wear?

so we're wedding guests next week at a formal wedding, but it's not black tie. my fiance will be wearing a dark gray suit, the jacket has lighter gray wider-spaced pinstripes. he'll also be wearing a white button-down collared shirt under, of course.

what kind of tie? pattern? no pattern? we're so clueless.

I would probably wear a coloured, patterned tie just to give some visual interest to his outfit.

If it's a formal wedding, I'd suggest a tie with a subtle pattern like a dot or stripe, perhaps in light blue or silver. When it comes to menswear, less color = more formal.
