Small elopement style wedding-can you have a bridal shower?

My fiancé and I are doing a very small wedding on the beach. We are only inviting a couple friends and our immediate families. Although, we will have receptions in both of our hometowns later. Is it okay to have a bridal shower and invite friends that are not coming to the ceremony?

Only okay if those friends are invited to the wedding.  Whether or not they attend, does not matter.

If they are not invited to the wedding they absolutely should not be invited to any pre-wedding parties.

  • An elopement does not have guests. So, it sounds like you are having a smaller, private wedding.

As Lile mentioned, you can only invite those who are invited to the wedding to any pre-wedding parties. However, if you are just looking to have a get together with family and friends before the wedding, you can have a bridal tea. Bridal teas are not traditionally gift giving events. Regardless, whether you end up having a shower or a tea, you need to have someone host one for you. You cannot host your own parties. So, if someone is offering to host a party for you, it's best to decline a shower but mention the concept of a tea.

  • So I think I broke the "rules" with this one.  We are eloping (we decide initially to only tell our parents and grandmas) and we were not going to have any showers or anything like that.  However, my grandma then insisted on throwing a shower for us and invited about 25 people, which was fine.  These people are obviously not invited to our wedding, nor are our parents or grandparents.  The shower was great and everyone commented on how cool it is that we are going away, just the two of us, and were really supportive!  Everyone just said they wanted to see pictures and wished us well.  So, in my opinion, if you have supportive family/friends who are understanding, it wouldn't be a problem and they'd be supportive regardless of being invited to the wedding or not.  Most people are understanding that a DW is a huge undertaking and expensive.  Do what's right for YOU :)
