How do you shop around to find best price for a dress?

I have a shortlist of dresses I'm after I've been to a couple of shops but they are way out of my price range and I have been unsuccessful at finding samples for them in my size. Where should I be looking?

Ideally the sample should be size 16 or above (my dress size is 14-16).

Help! my wedding is 20th December so I've been told I need to order now if I can't find a sample to cut costs.

Try calling Pearls Place. The dresses are not samples, but they do offer discounts. Sometimes up to 30 or 40% off of retail price. They don't like to sell a dress you haven't tried on though, so make sure you try it on and know exactly what size you need in that particular designer.

Have you looked to see if you can afford the dresses you're looking at on Tradesy or Once Wed or Pre-owned wedding dresses?  If you can afford them on one of those sites and even call Pearls Place to see what the price is on the dresses you like.  After you see if you're able to afford the gown, move forward and try the dresses on. 

I called several shops in my area that carried Allure Bridal to see who offered my gown at the lowest price.  Most places I called would not price match or discount to match another store.  All the stores were within 10% of each other when it came to price.

Some shops will sell you their sample gown.  Most of the shops will only give 10% off on the sample (but they will fix up and sanitize the gown -- make sure those things are included when buying a sample).

Have you ever seen the show on TLC "I found the gown"? It's a bridal store in Boston that has everything 30-50% off but of course they only get in what they get in, you can't order what they don't have. You can call them or check their website bridepower.com. I live near Boston so I called looking for mine and they didn't have it so I paid full price

@trucall - I'm getting married this October and am wearing Mori Lee 5103.  It's a size 14.  Are you interested in wearing a previously worn dress?  I'm not intent on keeping my dress afterwards so if you might be interested in mine let me know.
