Costa Rica Honeymoon?

My fiance and I are thinking of Costa Rica for our honeymoon and could use some advice! We plan on going for around 10 days and would prefer and all-inclusive resort. We would like to be in the same location the whole time, with the option of some day trips for activities. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Re: Costa Rica Honeymoon?

  • For an all-inclusive the Westin is a good option.  We stayed sort of near there at the JW Marriott Guanacaste, which is not all-inclusive, but the room rates were quite reasonable for the quality of hotel.  The restaurants were pricey (excellent though).  The Westin is not on a beach and you have to walk to get to the public beach, whereas the JW has it's own beautiful beach area.  Also, you should consider that you may want to do a bunch of excursions (ziplining, nature preserve, volcanos, etc) and those would be an additional fee, so really price out whether an all-inclusive is worth it.  These resorts are on the Pacific side of Costa Rica and you could get direct flights into Liberia airport (we took JetBlue).
  • I would suggest looking beyond all-inclusive's and consider staying in two different places.  Costa Rica is a beautiful country with a bunch of different areas, climates, terrains, etc.  It also take some time to drive to different areas do to the roads (narrow and low speed limits).
We did 4 nights in the Arenal area (Nayara) and 3 nights in Guanacaste (JW Marriott).  It was basically two different vacations.
I do know someone who stayed at the RIU Guanacaste and enjoyed it.
  • Molly&Andy... there is so much to do in CR that I think you are wasting your time at an AI. When I went (on a girls trip) we spend part of the week in Playas del Coco (beach on the Pacific side) and part of the week in the rainforest near Rincon de la Vieja volcano. The country is so diverse, you are really better off traveling around a bit.
  • I've been to CR a few times, and I'm going to agree with the above posters saying to also consider some options that aren't all inclusive. I stayed in an all inclusive the first time I went (because I had done that in Mexico and the Dominican in resort type towns) and I wish I hadn't! It wasn't even that nice - and I felt like I had limited myself to a concrete jungle type resort when there were so many lovely smaller hotels/vacation rentals and so many great restaurants and local things to check out. The food is great there so you'll want to try some restaurants! Oh and alcohol is cheap anyway (this coming from a Canadian). Check out tripadvisor and choose an area...for example Mal Pais, Tamarindo, Jaco/Playa Hermosa, Manuel Antonio, Arenal etc, and see if there are any smaller boutique hotels that grab your attention! I've also rented through sites like airbnb or vrbo.com and this is my favourite new way to vacation. Just grab some groceries and booze and make sure the place isn't too far away from restaurants! Have fun, Costa Rica is awesome.
