Honeymoon in California

We are thinking of going to California for our honeymoon and getting a hotel by a beach. I'm just not sure what beach to go to along with the best area in California.

  • California is a really big state (which this New Englander always forgets) with a bunch of distinct regions. San Diego, Orange County, and LA are all a bit different, and very different from San Francisco, which is also different from Northern California. And of course inland, there's another bunch of regions. Here's a good basic intro to the state: http://www.fodors.com/world/north-america/usa/california/
  • We did the LA area and San Diego area for our honeymoon.

We didn't stay near the beach in LA, but there's certainly many great options.  Santa Monica, Malibu, Long Beach, etc. are all great places to at least visit.

Then we drove down to Del Mar and stayed one night there at the Lauberge del mar, a really nice hotel.  We didn't pay for that (it was a free gift from my dad), so I don't know how much it cost.  But definitely a beautiful hotel on the beach.

We spent the rest of our honeymoon in La Jolla San Diego.  We stayed at the Grand Colonial La Jolla which is a very short walk to the beach.  It was a very nice, historic, but still reasonably priced hotel.  And La Jolla is a fun little part of San Diego with the beautiful cove, shops and restaurants, some caves you can explore, and the "Children's Beach" where all the seals come to hang out.

    Have fun!

I second the San Diego area.  La Jolla is beautiful, and I also really like the Carlsbad area.

About an hour north of San Diego is Temecula, which is one of southern California's wine regions.  We did a day trip up there with friends and had an amazing time.
