NWR: I'm going to punch somebody

And that would bode really poorly for my admission to the NY State Bar.

I just got an email to select my testing location for the bar exam.  This is HUGE because there are limited spots in NYC.  Happily, I saw NYC was listed as an available location for me.  Yay!  So I went to click on the location selection link.  It wouldn't load... wouldn't load.... I clicked for like five minutes and finally it loaded.  Well, NYC was already gone as an option.  So I chose my second choice, Albany, which will really suck to drive all the way out there and get a hotel, but it's the only best choice.  And then when submitting the form: "Server error."  Now I can't connect to the website at all.

Really? Are you shitting me?  How about when you send out a time-sensitive email to 15,000 neurotic bar examinees requiring them to fill out an online form, you make sure your website can handle the traffic?

Deep breaths.  Deep breaths.

On the bright side, one of my best girlfriends also has to test in Albany, so we can get a hotel together.  It will be the most pathetic sleepover ever. :)

  • Grump grump, huff puff.

I'm sure it will work out fine.  At least I finagled the website to confirm the Albany location.

But now my friend says she'll be too nervous to share a room, so I got my own.  Gah.  When will this be over????

  • I had to drive 2 and half hours to Chicago to take the bar, and I shared a room with my best law school friend.  Honestly, it would have been better if I had a room to myself.  We were both so strung out with nerves for the test that we both had trouble sleeping, and one of us wanted to stay up later to go over material for the essay portion the next day than the other.  We had a two room suite, but we could still see the light around the door.  Plus it was stressful trying to go to sleep and knowing that the other one was still up studying.

Having your own room is a blessing (except for the cost).  You won't have to worry about bothering your friend if you can't sleep or want to stay up late studying and you won't have to worry about her bothering you either.  If you stay in the same hotel, you could still get dinner together to decompress after the first day or hang out for a bit before going your separate ways.
  • I'm sorry that their website glitched, but no matter where you take it, you are going to rock it! Good luck!

And the fear of a glitch like that is exactly why I wrote out my exam when I took the NY bar instead of using the computer!  Another perk, writing meant that I got to take my test on a pier in Manhattan looking at the water.  It was pretty nice.

@kaos16 I actually thought about this when I saw they still have handwriting spots open in NYC.  But it would be impractical for me because I have repetitive stress injury in my hands, and writing gets too painful (typing is painful, too, but it's better).  Plus I just get out more thoughts in less time while typing.

That pier does sound awfully nice, though!

  • Aww that sucks. I love Albany though, I went to college there and I got engaged there :D
Once your test is over you NEED to go to Wings over Albany, best wings EVER.

How is one too nervous to share a room??

The bar exam is some serious shit.  And this friend is not a great test-taker.  So I understand.

And in other fun news, just asked my law firm and nope-- they won't reimburse me for the $320 I just spent on a hotel.  Awesome.

Seriously, if this website had just worked when it was supposed to, I'd be sleeping in my own bed and could get to the test for a Metrocard swipe.  Gahhhhhhh.

Sadly, I have to turn right around after the exam and drive to take the NJ bar.  So no wings for me.  :(

  • Whoa, you have to take TWO bar exams?!

And I guess now that I think of it that makes sense. I'm a terrible test taker, and I need to study alone before a serious exam. So I probably would want to be on my own, studying, without any distractions the night before.

@pinkcow13 Technically, I don't HAVE to take NJ exam.  But I want to because I live here and it will open more career options if I choose to transfer firms.  Plus if I ever have to handle a matter in NJ for family or anything, it will be easier.

But yeah, you have to take the bar exam for each state you might want to practice in.  Blech.
