Place Cards

Are you guys doing them? I have only been to one wedding that used them, and they pretty much just laid them all out and let us put our names on them, and place them where we wanted to sit.

Personally, I really don't want to do a seating chart...but would like to have some sort of system for people to save their seats.

Any ideas?

I'm doing an escort card. Our decor is natural/rustic so I will have a small piece of plantable seed paper tied to a pinecone. People will take these and put them at their seats. I will be assigning a table on the escort card but not actually putting an additional place card on the table--they can pick their seat at their assigned table. Hope that makes sense.

We are considering mixing tables with 1/2 of the brides family/guests with 1/2 of the grooms family/guests to encourage mingling.

I'm doing escort cards, I'm just sorting people by table. I used the tool here on The Knot and (after you upload your guest list) it took only about 20 minutes! I loved it, and I can tweak it as I get more RSVPs (right now I have about 10 random guests not seated) but as you put people in that declined the invite they will automatically be deleted from the seating chart.

My escort cards are drumsticks, and definitely my most extensive DIY project!
Here's a mock up of a drumstick, I still need to mkae a box for them to go in, and I'm going to stick them in styrofoam so they stand straight up, the styrofoam will be hidden with flat red marbles.

I like having an assigned table as a guest.  It just makes life easier.

For that you can make Cards with the guests name and table number, they can choose a seat at that table.  This way you can make sure people who know each other sit by each other.  That your grandpa isn't sitting right under the DJs speaker.  That your family is sitting near the Head Table, etc.

We are not doing assigned seating or escort cards.  We are doing a buffet for the dinner and I just want everyone to sit where they want, with whoever they want.

We are doing place cards as we are having a plated dinner so it is easier for the venue. I have been to weddings where they have been assigned seating as well as wedding where there isn't. I must admit that I liked the assigned seating better. It was too chaotic without it. Yes I will admit that working on the seating chart was a pain in the butt but I think it will be well worth it at the end. Like someone else said, the people can sit by whoever they want at the table but at least this way they are seated by people they know and it is easier for the venue to know how many chickens, beef and kids meals per table.

Also, if you are doing a plated meal, you can use the place cards to help distinquish who is having what. We offered a chicken option, a beef option and a children's meal. For the individuals having chicken, we put snowflakes on their place cards and for the children's meals we put a little gem on them this way the caterer knows who wants want. (beef we didn't do anything to their place cards)

    Good luck! Hope it helps!
