We are a same sex couple who just celebrated 15 years together. We had a civil union in 2008 with all our family. The big Italian, formal church wedding with 100 people. So this time, we would like to have a small, intimate wedding, ceremony and reception for probably 20 -30 people. We are looking at the 2nd or 3rd Saturday in October. The problem is I can't find a place that will take that small of a minimum. Would prefer a place where we can have both the ceremony and reception. We are in north NJ but at this point I will consider anywhere in NJ. Is it possible to have a ceremony, reception, open bar and dancing with such a small group? Thanks for any advice! Melissa

Try Boulevard 572 in Kenilworth. They have a couple private rooms. The food is amazing and Josh the manager is great to work with. I am not sure what their minimums are but October is off season so they will probably be able to work with you.

My sister was married at the Molly Pitcher Hotel in Red Bank last October. The ceremony and reception were both there. She had 35 people, and they had several rooms to choose from. Their sister hotel, the Oyster Point, is a different style and also had options. I was married at the Palace in Somerset, and they, too have small rooms upstairs, although I think the minimum might be too high. Oh and we looked at Mayfair Farms also, smaller rooms with yet a different type of feel. Congrats on having such a wonderful, long relationship! Good luck!

  • You could try the Zeppelin Hall Beer Garden in Jersey City; Kolo Klub in Hoboken; or the Liberty House or Maritime Parc in Jersey City.  All of these restaurants have private rooms.  I listed them starting with the most casual, so it depends on what you're looking for.  You could also try the Chart House in Weehawken.  Good luck!

  • Thank you for all the help! This is a great start. The only place I contacted so far that would take such a small minimum was The Madison Hotel in Morristown. So the above will give me a good start. I like more modern or unusual places but at this point I am not overly picky since we have such a small group. We just wanted something more special than a justice of the peace. My spouse had 3 cancers in the last 5 years so I just want to make it special. Thanks again for all the help! :)

Cinders on Route 10 in Mine Hill has a small downstairs banquet room.  Also look at

The Jefferson House in Lake Hopatcong

The Lake Mohawk Country Club in Sparta

    Perona Farms in Andover

    The Mohawk House in Sparta

  • Consider B&B's.  They're the right size and Im' sure would love to host an event like a wedding.  In his slideshow, my photographer had some images from a place called the Whistling Swan.  Maybe try there.
  • Sayen Gardens in Hamilton but you have to hire your own cater and bartender. Its a goregeous place and dates in October this year might be already booked
