No DJ?

Has anyone gone with a friend instead of hiring a DJ?  We're thinking about making a huge playlist and bringing back up MP3 players/Laptops and putting a friend in charge of playing the music, maybe having them or a family member announce us for the the grand march, first dance and toasts.

Has anyone done this, planning on doing this or been to a wedding that has?
I'm wondering how well it will work out.

     Hi lizm336

The wedding I am planning at the end of this month is not having a DJ they are using an ipod that will be hooked up to the speakers at the reception hall. In my opinion you do not need a DJ but make sure you have enough songs, a good assortment, and someone that is willing to MC part of it your wedding reception will be great, and it will not cost you $500 extra.

You sound like you have thought through all of your backups, just make sure your speakers are good quality and that the sound can be adjusted for the room (the equalizer).

We made up a play list and gave it to the DJ and said: "play anything off here and the dance floor will be packed all night"  He did just that and we were right with the dance floor being crowded.

I think as long as you know your music and your guests there is no reason NOT to go for it!

What type of songs did you have on your playlist?

My future BIL does a little Dj'ing on the side and has offered to be our "DJ" for the night. He is manning the ipod and sound system. I agree with the PP. Just make sure you have backups and have a friend man the station :o)

We are planning on doing this. To make sure we get a good mix of songs, we put a song request section on our wedding website. FI also has a friend who used to do some DJ'ing and has offered to watch over the music and do intros for the first dance, father/daughter, etc.

I'm planning on renting speakers, but haven't looked into vendors for that yet.
