NER/NWR Hulu Help

My husband and I have a Hulu Plus account. He wants to share our account with one of his cousins. I'm pretty sure it's against contract, but I read the terms and conditions and couldn't find anything about it. Do any of you know?

  • We do this with Fi's siblings. Nobody has arrested us yet! I think they might not let multiple computers log in at the same time.

  • I looked at Section 3 of the terms and conditions of service and see what you mean.  It's not explicitly against contract to share your information with another person (which allows families or couples to have one account), but it's not explicitly allowed either.  On the one hand, you are agreeing to use Hulu for your personal use.  On the other, the expressly forbidden behaviors all are things that go against copyright or would set you up as a competitor to Hulu's services.

Personally, there are some people I'd be okay sharing info with and others I would not; I've given my sister permission to use my/our account when she's asked if she could watch something she missed that's not available without Plus.  But if you aren't comfortable with someone else having access to your account information, and therefore to your payment and personal information, I think it's fine to say you aren't comfortable sharing outside your home (like when someone stays with us and they can use our Hulu Plus via the Xbox).

Perhaps your husband could invite his cousin over to watch something together?  Or perhaps you both could gift him a subscription to Hulu Plus for his birthday or another holiday?  It's an option under your account settings.

  • Okay thanks. I've met this cousin and really like him. So I trust him with the info. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't breach of contract or anything.

I don't see why it would be, though. You're allowed so many devices to put it on. I, myself, have it on my laptop, blu-ray player, and cell phone plus another computer.
  • I'm sure plenty of people do this, so I don't think you're in danger of getting sued by hulu. But I would be super annoyed if I couldn't use the subscription I was paying for because someone else was using it at the same time (ran into this situation when I shared an account with my college boyfriend...argh) so be prepared that this may happen if hulu doesn't allow steaming on two devices at once. You might want to ask your FI how you'd handle that if it became a recurring problem.

  • I think the only thing you need to avoid is profiting off of the Hulu service... for example, you pay $10 a month for the service and you charge three other people $5/month in exchange for your password/login info. They get to use Hulu at a discounted rate, but you're profiting $5 a month. If you simply share your info with someone else, you should be in the clear.
  • Put it this way - I don't know ANYONE, in my family or college, who doesn't share their Netflix and Hulu accounts.

A lot of my friends even trick their browsers into thinking they're in other countries (illegal, I think?) and their Netflix accounts jump across countries every week. Their accounts still work just fine, too.

Both my middle brother and I use my oldest brother's netflix account. Though with netflix, you can only have two people streaming on a tv at a time, so I couldn't watch through my x box when my brothers were streaming through their tvs... that was annoying this weekend, but can't complain about free.

We're in Canada so we don't really use it, but FI says you can share it but you might not be able to both watch it at the same time.
