Bleach it. It's your washer/dryer, you're just cleaning them. Otherwise, straight up pull the fuses out. Makes it a pain to do laundry, but if there's no power.... What's the electric company say?

The electric company won't do anything.
  • I vote for the lock. We recently had to move our garbage can into our garage b/c someone in the neighborhood started using our trash can. Twice in 2 weeks our can was full of trash that wasn't ours and I had no room to put OUR trash in it, so I just eliminated their ability to do it. I don't know WTF is wrong with people.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I like the bleaching idea. When people use/take stuff that does not belong to them and they complain that is annoying  pet peeve.
Back in college, one my friends would place her food in the communal fridge and it had a note and everything stating it was her, her room number, etc. People would take her food and eat it. My friend has a digestion problem and often added her medical laxative to most of her food to help. So whenever people would go in her food, they would have to go the bathroom. The ones who ate her food complained that she could have "poisoned them" or much worse yet they went into her food knowing it didn't belong to them.

  • If locking them isn't an easy option, I'd run with the bleach idea.  Definitely.  If they're asshats enough to use them, knowing they're not theirs to use, then the only way to get through to them is to learn the hard way, and I'd dare them to say something!  If it continues, powdered dye may be in order.  If you can catch the machines in use, I'd take their clothes and leave a note that if they want their laundry they need to come to your unit and collect - and they'll need to bring money for the use of your appliances.

  • Deliberately destroying their clothes with bleach? LMAO at people who think this is a good idea. You know the OP has to keep living with her neighbors right? Starting battle with them is an epically stupid idea. I'd stop by each apartment in person and explain that your power bill is very high because other people are using your washer/dryer, say of course you don't know who it is, but it's a real hardship on you. I would also put a sign above the machine saying basically the same thing and investigate the lock.

Or, bleach their clothes and have fun with that. Being "right" isn't always worth it.

I have no other suggestions beyond finding some way to lock the thing when you're not there. Just wanted to say that this is not a childish complaint. I'd be pissed too.
