Best? Place settings or 45 pice set?

I need help. I want to know if it is better to buy stainless flatware by the place setting or to buy a set with 8 place settings and a host set?
( which would yeld better quality product)

Re: Best? Place settings or 45 pice set?

  • as long as flatware is a good quality stainless steel (18/10) it doesn't matter, and IMO stainless place settings are a waste of everyone's money unless you really want them because they are the SAME pattern as your china. I used to be a registry consultant and I NEVER tried to upsell the brides to place settings for the flatware.
  • From what I've seen, the "nicer" brands/lines tend to be sold by the place setting rather than in a large set. Same with china. Real silver definitely would be.

If it's for your registry, I'd go with the place settings anyway so it's a more manageable price point for people to buy individually. A full, high-quality set will be super spendy.

If you're buying it yourself and have the cash to throw down all at once and found something you love that comes in a full set, go for it. Pay attention to the makeup of stainless (18/10 vs 18/0) to determine what's "best."

  • There is a huge difference in quality in the stainless flatware market, and you can't just go by manufacturers.  Formerly status names like Wallace and Oneida are now made in China.  You need to see them in person and look at the finish, weight and balance.  Pay special attention to the tines of the forks.
As a gift shopper, I like the idea of giving higher quality in smaller amounts - place settings.  I have been through two sets of cheap stainless in the past 25 years.  My mother had her original Oneida Lasting Rose for 50 years, and my cousin took it to use, since she had the same pattern from her mother.
