bouquet question for the OMHs

Hi!
I'm directing this question more towards the ladies that have already been married, as the flowers have been done and the professional photos received.

I bought an off-the-rack, light ivory dress with tons of beading (not quite silver, not quite gold- we can't really identify the bead color) and my mom is creating the bouquets herself.  I had my heart set on a white bouquet (doing a black-and-white thing overall for the reception and black BM dresses).  This afternoon my mom was fitting my dress and we were doing some styling with jewelry and the bouquet.

I can't help feeling like the white of the flowers totally clashes with my dress. We're looking at calla lilies and baby's breath, and the baby's breath seems to go much better than the lilies.  White bouquets seem fairly popular, especially with lilies, but I figure even with colored flowers nothing's really going to "match" a wedding dress.

What do you think about this? How did you flowers "go" with your dresses?  Did you feel this way at all when you designed your bouquets? Both my parents say the bouquet is so different from the dress it looks right, not like it clashes.  Plus, we can't seem to find the right color ribbon to wrap the stems.  Confused!

Thanks!

Re: bouquet question for the OMHs

  • My experience is a little different because my dress was hot pink, but I chose colors for the bouquet that complemented it, but didn't match (lighter pink, peach and cream, with lots of greenery). That way, it stood out on its own in pictures.

White and cream are both neutrals, so they can't really clash. But if you're not happy with it, it's time to make some adjustments.
  • My dress was ivory and my flowers were white and it didn't matter at all. I think black ribbon could be lovely. Would you consider adding some blush to your color scheme? What I'm picturing could be gorgeous. Or upload a picture of your dress! We love dress porn :)
  • My dress was some color of off white. I chose my bouquet more on feel/style and flowers I wanted rather than what "went" with my dress.

That said, I wanted color. I had hydrangeas as the main flower, and wanted an architectural feel.

    Anniversary
  • I had an off white dress, black bridesmaid dresses, all with white carnation bouquets tide with black ribbon. It looked very nice and no one went "those flowers made her dress look dirty/dingy/doesn't match". No one said that because it looked just fine.

  • Well since you all love Dress Porn!

    Hope this link works: clicky

Yes, we can try a black ribbon for sure!  Good suggestion. My mom had picked up silver and it just didn't look right. (Luckily she has a huge sewing room so anything she gets for these experiments won't go to waste.)

I appreciate the reassurance on the neutrals and not clashing.  It helps!

  • Love your dress! It's less beading than I was picturing, so I think you're over-thinking the flowers bit. Does the dress need to be hemmed? You could use the leftover fabric to be tied around. But honestly, I don't think I have ever noticed the wrapping on a bouquet.

    Stuck in Box!

    (Thanks!)
I just asked my mom. When she hemmed it, only about an inch came off. The way the skirt is created also means there isn't one very long section of the hem either, since there are tulle panels between the silk panels.  Good thinking though!
You're right that the wrapping generally isn't that noticeable. I do notice when people don't wrap the end of the stems as that lends a certain look.

  • I will even go further and say that I did notice the bride's bouquet on the table and thought the color really clashed, but when she was holding it, I didn't notice at all.

I think a brown ribbon would go with your dress.
ETA: Just noticed you're doing a black and white theme! Sorry! Don't do brown.

Comparison to an off white dress with "white" flowers - I was surprised they looked so yellow. Might work out for you and your dress and won't actually clash. Flowers are peonies, roses, orchids and believe it or not hydrangeas are in there somewhere.. I did a grey ribbon.

  • The white flowers against an ivory dress will add dimension to your pictures. They won't clash.
    Beautiful dresses thisismynickname and Sugargirl1019.

  • @Sugargirl1019‌ & @thisismynickname‌ you both have beautiful dresses!

Turns out my off white dress and the carnations look practically the same color.

Callas are, IME, a funeral flower. Have you considered other lilies? My dress was white and my bouquet had greenery, baby's breath, white roses, white mini-carnations, and white alstroemeria. That last one is a member of the lily family and is much smaller than most. I wanted kind of a petite bouquet. So much so, in fact, that the florist was afraid she was making it too small, lol.

Anyway, I feel like it's probably the size of the calla petals that's making you think they're 'too white,' so I would go with something more dainty.

This is what the alstroemeria looks like, by the way.
