What a week!!!

So, this week I have had like zero time for "knotting". It started off with FI and I looking at houses to buy in the area (which are limited because we are in the middle of nowhere and expensive because we are in the middle of oil/potash country) because his parents dropped the bombshell on us that as a wedding present, they are giving us money for a down payment on a house! Then, on Thursday, FI texted me saying "look who I found" with a picture of a dog... We had discussed getting a second bigger dog after the honeymoon but I guess this dog found FI when he was working near a reserve and tried to jump into his car. The poor thing was severely emaciated and riddled with ticks. When FI took him to the vet, the vet said he'd never seen so many ticks on a dog before. They pulled off around 200 (50 in his ears alone), and we pulled another 10 last night.

Now, the new puppy (vet guesses around 6 months old) is starting to get used to things around here. He's good with the cat. You don't mess with the kitty. :P The new puppy is super docile with people and was great with the other dog at first but now that he is feeling a bit healthier (after 2 days of plenty of food and love), he is starting to get a little aggressive with the other dog. The other dog is now starting to keep his distance but this has been keeping us busy for sure! We're getting the puppy neutered soon so hopefully that will help curb the aggression but if it doesn't, we may have to surrender him to a shelter. FI is really sad about that possibility because he saved this little guy, so fingers crossed that doesn't happen! Anyways, here's the new pup.... we named him Drake (after Nathan Drake from Uncharted.... if anyone knows the game :P)

Anyways, here are some pics! He obviously has some pitbull in him but the vet figures he's more lab/shepherd.

Sorry, interwebs was making it difficult for me to resize to make smaller....

What a cutie! I hope he works out. That's a LOT of ticks :(

I'd definitely say that there's some German shepherd in there somewhere. He's got that face.

  • Update!!

We've had a great day today. No lashing out at the little dog and Drake's even been getting playful with him. The little dog has started to establishing his spot as "top dog" today.... when Drake went over to play with the sleeping little dog, the little one growled and Drake ran away instead of lashing out. It's a start! :)b They're even back to being near each other.

  • Just like with two females, two males can take time to establish dominance and make peace. But it usually works out. Our boys got along together really well once they got comfortable wirh each other. Also, the puppy may kust be trying to play. Puppy play can look really aggressive but it's how they learn to behave in their pack.
  • He's adorable! Good luck!

Yeah, what happened last night was definitely not puppy play. It was a "get the frick away from my new stuff" full on attack (only thing missing was blood).... Today he's been playing though. Week took the boys to the farm with us while we did our engagement photos and they played together with the big dog (a 3 year old lab/border collie/greyhound monster of a dog. lol) and they were great. Drake even played with the month old kittens.

Just a heads up, based on the history of Drake (ticks, lost wondering etc) it will probably take some time for him to warm up.. I'd give him a month before deciding to turn him in to the shelter. The dogs will work themselves out (as long as your watching them together) in their own time.

ETA: I assume Drake has been on his own for a while, so I imagine he's used to fending for himself (food, life in general) so he may be a little possessive due to that. Also, if he's 6 months old, that's the prime time for dogs to learn their aggressiveness (how hard is too hard when it comes to biting). Because my 10 yr old dog won't wrestle with my 17 month old, we had to wrestle play with him a lot of his puppy days and teach him mouthing is fine, biting is not. I think wrestling is his favorite game now, and even now, sometimes he bites too hard and I have to tell him "ouch" and he'll realize he hurt me by biting hard (granted, no blood has ever happened but just so he knows he can't bite hard)

Can I just give you a huge internet hug for helping this sweet boy? I hope everything works out & you're able to keep him!

  • Thanks @melbelleup. We are getting him neutered next week and plan on giving it some time since both FI and I are quite attached to this sweetie now. Yesterday, the two dogs were good together and we even took them to the family farm to play with the big dog while we did our engagement photos. Drake was wonderful. He and the big dog (a lab/border collie/greyhound monster. lol) had a playful game of tug o war with a toy (he was happily sharing toys!) and was so super sweet and gentle to the 1 month old farm kittens (although the momma attacked him when he got to close to one)... fingers crossed but I'm pretty optimistic that it will all work out! :D
