Dress material

The site I found this dress on says that the material is lace. Which I get. However, there are different ideas on what lace is when it comes to wedding dresses. What I'm trying to figure out is if there is a way to narrow down my search for this particular type of lace. This doesn't seem to be a lace overlay like I see on so many other dresses.

I absolutely love this dress and the lace because I want to use my dress to make a quilt in the future and the lace in this dress would be perfect. This dress and site is in china. I'm not going that route.

So, if any of you fabulous ladies can help me out that would be fantastic!

There are two ways to get a lace dress:
    1. Use a solid fabric, and then do a lace overlay. In this way, you can use lace fabric, but because lace is transparent it needs a backing. (Unless you're Pnina Tournai)
    2. Lace applique. This puts the lace pieces directly onto a different fabric and sews them in place. This seems to be more in line with what you want. So just do a search for gowns with applique and see what you find.

  • That kind of looks like brocade to me, but I am not a fabric expert.

I searched for the above dress, and it's lace overlayed on satin. Hope that helps!

That dress was originally a Maggie Sottero gown from a few years ago and its name is Grace Kelly.  I believe it is lace over delustered satin (not sure the type of lace, though).

  • It is probably re-embroidered alencon lace.  (c = s sound).  This is what is usually used for this type of applique.

  • I think it's re-embroidered Alencon lace too. Here's a close-up so you can see if that's the look you're going for. It'll have a bit of a thicker look to it than typical lace.
