How much time are you taking off?

There was a huge issue in my previous job (when we first got engaged) with the knowledge that I wouldn't get any time off before or after the weekend of our wedding.
I got a new job and had my schedule worked around my wedding weekend within the first three weeks.

I'm taking the day before our wedding off right now, which is also the day we set things up and then rehearse and have a nice "rehearsal dinner" with close family/friends, but I'm thinking it would be more beneficial to take off more time before the wedding than just the one day...

I'm just curious; how much time are you, or did you take off before your actual wedding day? A day, a week, nothing?

Re: How much time are you taking off?

  • We're not going to have a honeymoon as FI will be in school and all of our money is going to the wedding. That said, I'm taking off 2-3 days before the wedding and 2-3 days afterwards. The time before will help with prep but the remaining days will be to relax and take care of any follow up.

    6+ weeks.

To be fair the boat I worked on goes out of the water for 4-6 weeks. I planned my wedding around that time. Which was also slow time for DH. He took off 3.5 weeks.

Our wedding was OOT. The first week we went to the location and hung out with friends. We didn't need the time, we just had the time. Then we spent 2.5 weeks on our HM.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • My wedding was on a Saturday.  I took a half day the Thursday before, a full day the Friday before and then a full week off plus an additional Monday for our HM.

Do you plan on getting your nails done?  If so then maybe see if you can leave work slightly early, like at 3pm on Thursday to get them done and then you have Friday to do all your last minute stuff.  As long as you are organized and everything is ready to go for that Friday before then you really don't need more time off unless you really want it.

We're getting married on a Saturday and I took off Thur-Fri before. I'm doing my own centerpieces so needed time to get those done, plus whatever mani/pedi/other pampering, rehearsal, etc.

Then I'm off the following week and the next Mon-Tue for the honeymoon. :)

My wedding is 2 days after Christmas. Since I work for the local government, I get December 24, 25, and 26 off. I think I am going to take the 23rd also to get a few things done because honestly, I won't do anything wedding related on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Then I'm taking the following week off for the honeymoon. I will already have New Year's Day off so the total time I will actually have to take off is 5 days (using vacation time) but I will be off for almost two full weeks.

  • I'm taking two weeks off around the wedding, a week of which is the honeymoon. It works out to having three days off before the wedding, and one day off after the honeymoon.

I wish I were taking more, but I work in a small office and I think my boss would freak out.
  • Married on a Saturday, took Friday before and the week after off.

  • I am planning on taking Friday and Monday off for our Saturday wedding. We can't go on our honeymoon until about 2 months after the wedding, so I wanted to have at least a day off to relax and decompress. Depending on what our honeymoon plans end up being, I might take more time, but I want to make sure I save as much vacation time as possible for our honeymoon.
  • Our wedding is a Friday, I'm taking the Thursday before off and the week after for our HM and the Monday after that so I can pick up my cat from his bed and breakfast place (he's spoiled, I admit it!).

  • We got married on a Saturday. I only took off Friday.  And had 6 million people coming into my office Thursday asking why the hell I was there.

  • We're getting married on a Saturday and are taking the full week before off. We have to fly there and wanted a few days of R&R (wishful thinking?) before.

The day before (Friday) and then 2 weeks after for our HM.
  • Well, I'm a teacher so technically I have the whole summer off but really, I don't. I will be setting up my new classroom all summer and preparing for the next year. I plan to take a week before the wedding to go to my parents' place and get things in order plus my brother (who is also a gm) will be having surgery the week before the wedding (he's been waiting 3 years for this so we're not postponing it) so my mom and I will be also talking care of him during that time. We will then have 2 weeks after for our honeymoon....

This is going to be a busy summer. I will probably be in my new classroom 8 hours a day/ 7 days a week just to get everything I need to get done, done! *sigh* That's the price I have to pay, I guess. :P

I am getting my nails done, which is another reason I'm thinking of taking more time off. It takes me a good 2-3 days to get used to having my nails done so everything I do isn't awkward, and I'm not actually allowed to have acrylic nails at my work-place. So I'd either have to hide them for a few days before the wedding, or just take a few extra days off...

I'm also thinking it'd help to take more time off since our rehearsal dinner is going to be hosted at our house - super casual. An extra day before the psychotic stuff starts actually happening to get our house organized and cleaned and the laundry caught up (and folded, that's my weakness) would help immensely..

But, it doesn't seem too weird to take a couple of days off before the wedding, I guess, from y'all's responses. :3
I'm doing my own decorations and centerpieces and everything, so having at least the Thursday before (we decorate on Friday) to get those all finished and organized to get the set-up part done quick would definitely help. :3
  • I'm getting married on Friday and I'm taking off Wed and Thursday before and taking a week and half after the wedding

  • I'm taking a week off so tomorrow is actually my last day of work. That being said, I live in NC and my wedding is in PA so I'm doing a lot of last minute meetings the last week. Saturday is our Bach parties. Then Sunday is my final dress fitting (I only had one so far and that was in May). I'll be meeting with my cake person Tuesday to pay her and go over details again, Wednesday from 10a-3p I am getting my hair highlighted, trimmed, hair trial, nails painted, and eyebrows waxed. Thursday I'll be spending most of the day making my centerpieces (not hard, but time consuming) and picking up my wedding dress. Then Friday I have to drop things off at reception ballroom, rehearsal, and dinner. At some point my DJ and photographer also want to meet up.

SO for me, a week off is DEFINITELY worth it versus headaches. That being said, I've been saving my vacation days like mad and I work at a school district. I already have Fridays off during summer because I work 7:00 am-5:00 pm every other day. I'm luckily able to go a week in PA, come back for 3 days, go on our HM for 10 days, come back 3 days and then go to my brother's wedding in PA.... needless to say, HECTIC!!

If you have a complicated situation (OOS) I would highly recommend a week off, if not, I would at least recommend taking off Wed-Fri if possible to get done last minute details with no stress.

  • I have two jobs, one that is a normal 9-5 weekday schedule and one that is all over the place. At weekday job I'm taking off the day before (Friday). I'm going to go back to work the Monday after and work through Wednesday, then we're leaving on our honeymoon Thursday so I'm taking that Thursday and Friday. So I only had to take three days for the entire wedding and we're still getting a four day honeymoon, so I was pretty happy. At my other job I'm taking a full two weeks because it's more flexible and I want us to be able to settle in.

I specifically planned my wedding to fall after spring break so that I would have that week to do last minute things. The week after break, I worked 2 days and then took Wednesday-Friday off before the wedding as well as the following Monday after.

A little less than a week because it's a DW for us (my hometown across the country) and I haven't been able to come back for much planning beforehand. Plus, I never get to see my family much anymore and just want to spend some time with them and other guests. I'm a teacher at a community college with a certain amount of paid leave, and my school also pays for subs. I might have to take a little bit of a pay cut, but I can also make it up later by subbing for other people's classes throughout the semester. So my situation is a bit different.

I plan to take 2-3 days off prior to the wedding. We're doing tons of DIY stuff, so I imagine I'll need all the time I can get!

  • I'm not taking any time off before the wedding but I'm taking two weeks off after.
  • We had a very small wedding but I took 3.5 days off (2.5 before the weekend and 1 after).  I didn't really have that much stuff to do but my sister was flying into town for our wedding so I wanted to be able to spend time with her.

My thought was to try and get everything in line on Thursday so I can have Friday for pampering!

  • None. I'll likely leave early the last workday before the wedding since it's a holiday weekend, but I'll be back at my desk bright eyed and bushy tailed on Monday morning.

  • Our wedding is a Sunday, so no time before, but two weeks after for the honeymoon.  I'm already expecting that Friday before to be the loooooongest day of work ever.

  • I may be outside the norm, here....My job has tons and tons of vacation. Six weeks every year, plus a bunch of holidays. So I am taking advantage of that and doing 2 whole weeks at the wedding time. It is OOT for us and I really want to go visit my family. Then, we are going to the beach for a couple days, coming back to NY and FI is moving in with me.

We are going on a honeymoon at Christmas.

    Ditto!
  • I got married on a Friday.  I took the entire week of the wedding off and another 1.5 weeks after the wedding for the honeymoon.  The 4 days before the wedding were well spent.  I cleaned the house, picked up my dress, visited with OOT friends coming in, got a massage and a pedicure, and we had the rehearsal/dinner the night before.
