Enough to wake me up in the morning

edited June 2014 in Chit Chat
On Tuesday night my SO and I were going grocery shopping. I walked out my apartment's security door and saw something moving on the ground. I thought it was a feather blowing in the wind, so I didn't pay too much attention. Then I about stepped on it and it started really moving. At this point I realized what it really was....a gardner (is that the right spelling? I always called them garter snakes growing up, until I realized that was not it) snake. This caused me to inhale quickly and start backing up right into my SO. This caused him to back into the door. Apparently it took him a second to get his head around me to see what the fuss was about.

Yesterday morning we were walking out of my apartment and he was ahead of me. We are out in the common area hallway and he is almost to the security door when he hears me going "hey". There was that stupid little gardner snake IN THE HALLWAY!!! My SO said, let me get that out of here and I said, no don't touch it. Then he started to say, but if we leave it...and I realized where he was going with this. I didn't want that thing IN my apartment. I told him, I'm going to my car where it's safe. My SO captured him and then took him outside and put him down the hill.

Saved from the little gardner snake, by my SO. I'm not a snake person if you couldn't tell. I can do spiders and mice. Snakes...no way.

Let me tell you, if I see that thing again, it will die. It has had plenty of chances to get out of here. Now anytime I walk in my apartment I'm looking for that thing. Hopefully, the kitties will find it first.

  • Yea for kitties, keeping you safe.
  • Ugh effin garter snakes (yes, that is the right term for them). I don't care if they probably won't bite me, I hate them.

  • I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but where there's one, there's probably a lot more.

My Grandpa was HORRIFIED of snakes to the point where we were at his cabin and he saw one on the back porch and he shot it. Shot it with a buck shot so there were holes all over the snake and the porch. And guess what? It was a pregnant mama snake, and all her babies started crawling out.  Pretty sure Grandpa shit himself lol
  • Ugh I'm the same way with snakes even garter snakes.

When I was younger my family went on vacation for about and week and when we got back we had tons of garter snakes all over my mom's garden.  Luckily our cat and some of the other cats in the neighborhood were attacking the snakes.  The snakes were pretty much all gone within a couple days, but it still scares me to think about.

If the snake tries to get into your apartment and you have a cat, the cat will probably take care of the snake before you even see it.

I love garter snakes.  I used to play with them as a kid.  I used to catch frogs and put them in front of them so they had easy food and it was neat to watch.

That would be me. I would totally freak out if babies started coming out.

I'm glad to hear the stories of the cats getting the snakes. I know my kitties are little hunters, so this gives me hope that if I ever see a snake in my place, it will be dead with claw marks all over it.
  • @thetimewillcome - I am also scared of snakes - all of them. I hope that you don't see anymore! @loveislouder - that is TERRIFYING! I would die.

Oh, so you like mice?  Rodents of all kinds?  Frogs?  Toads?  This is what the garter snake hunts and eats.
The snake will not hurt you.   It will not bite you.  Leave it alone and let it patrol the yard for snake yummies.  You are being very silly.

(From Wikipedia)  Garter snakes, like all snakes, are carnivorous. Their diets consist of almost any creature they are capable of overpowering: slugs, earthworms, leeches, lizards, amphibians, ants, crickets, frog eggs, toads, minnows, and rodents. When living near water, they will eat other aquatic animals. The ribbon snake (Thamnophis sauritus) in particular favors frogs (including tadpoles), readily eating them despite their strong chemical defenses. Food is swallowed whole. Garter snakes often adapt to eating whatever they can find, and whenever, because food can be scarce or abundant. Although they feed mostly upon live animals, they will sometimes eat eggs.

Actually, it is very funny you say that. I was explaining this story to a friend and I started it by saying: "You know how I'm usually logical and reasonable?" That all goes out the window when it comes to snakes.

I understand that they do good. I really do. I just don't like them...not at all. I don't seek them out to kill or anything. Also, in this case, I didn't even hurt it. My SO sent him over the hill (placed on the ground, not threw or anything). However, if I see him again (I should clarify this to mean in my place of residence, actually IN not outside...IN), I think he has a death wish and I will oblige.

I should also clarify that my kitties are strictly indoors, so if they are getting to it then it is IN my apartment.

I'm also happy to see that it is actually garter, not gardner. Sorry for looking like an idiot in my original post.
  • Lol sorry! But just for the record, seeing my Grandpa dance and screech was fairly hilarious.
  • My brother used to catch them and keep them in terrariums when we were kids. A couple of them had babies while in "captivity". My mother, who is terrified of snakes, was not amused. They won't bite often, but they do bite when provoked.

I was just about to say that. That snake was probably hunting for rodents or a surplus of insets. Do not kill the snake for keeping the bugs and rodents out. I have them in my yard and then I found field mice in the garage and the snake has been taking care of them. No more mice to piss off my dogs.

This is totally normal.  Primates are pre-programmed to fear  (or at least be hyper aware of) snakes.  See here: http://www.enca.com/technology/research-proves-fear-snakes-innate
Don't worry guys, I have the Wedding Police AND the Whambulance on speed dial!
