What do you want in a moderator?

Re: What do you want in a moderator?

  • I agree with most of what others have said.

I do agree with there sometimes being a sense of "piling on" but it would be difficult to mod that.

I think mods for local boards should be someone who is local.  Perhaps local mods could only have one board, their local board, and then a couple mods to oversee them all. This would be kind of difficult because some of the slower boards have very few regs. My local board, Alaska, hasn't had a new post in about a year, except for Knot Jackie introducing Knot Porscha. If that were the case, maybe local mods could have slightly less powers: could delete threads, freeze users, but it would all have to be approved by a higher mod, maybe?
I think this is a good idea.

  • I think most of the local boards are pretty slow, except maybe Vegas. I try to pop over to the San Antonio board when I think about it. I live in VA now but was in SA for 10 years and got married there, so I have no recs or info on stuff in my current city but do for SA. Someone needs to at least be able get rid of vendors that pop up on any of those.

  • Also, a lot of the sub-boards aren't very active either.

  • Allowing the mods to temporarily freeze a user for later review/deletion by a KG is assuming that KP (or any KG) will actually DO it within the specified amount of time. I don't have the confidence at this point that any action would be taken, within time or not.  KP tries to ignore the boards whenever possible at this point.

Maybe that could be up to a supermod then... or maybe by a vote of a few of them.

  • Just fairness. That's all. I've been on Internet forums for a billion years- okay, since AOL charged by the hour- and I've seen a lot of chat rooms ruined by ban happy moderators. So treat us like adults, be fair, I'm happy.

I really wish The Knot would think about combining some of these. A wedding woes, wedding party, chit chat, wedding 911, etc. EXCESSIVE. And I think it hurts the community - newbies post on those more obscure boards and then get poor results.

I think part of the problem is the way they're categorized... I can't even navigate to half the boards on mobile, or my local/month board quick links. It makes no sense to have them split into "wedding boards" and "special topic wedding boards" etc. Fewer boards, all in one list.

  • Wedding woes is it's own little community. There is no way they will be getting rid of that one.

I think the 911 board is silly b/c I think it isolates people. Newbs post there and maybe don't even know there is a whole other community going on out here. Wedding Party gets a fair amount of traffic (and drama). I'm not sure why you mention CC in this.

The slow boards are things like music, photography, flowers, etc. The so-called "special topic" boards and theme boards. Moms and Maids, Favors, and Pre Wedding Parties are the only ones that get any decent traffic over there (maybe Gay Weddings; I never go on there b/c I have nothing to offer).  And Not Engaged, of course, is kind of its own community as well with plenty of traffic.

I didn't mean those specific boards, Addie, sorry. I've been around long enough to know the different groups on the boards, and I wouldn't suggest taking those away.

My list obviously was not meant to suggest to combine those into one. I should have made a better list of mostly the "special topic boards." Wedding Party and Moms & Maids for example I don't think really need to be separate boards. Yeah, people post about their moms there, but they post about their moms everywhere too. And we don't need "my bridesmaids suck" conversations in two places.

ETA: Pre-Wedding Parties would be a nice one to move over to be more visable really. Having all the shower and b-party conversations in one place would be nice.

  • Oh, ok, gotcha. I was confused by what you were saying about specific boards, I guess.

  • I'm still waiting on them to re-separate Budget and DIY so I don't hold my breath they will do anything with any of those boards, either!

Yeah, no sorry, my bad. I just meant have approximately 40 topic boards with tons of overlap is incredibly excessive.

Lol you mean instead of separating two boards that don't belong together at all and recreating useless boards like Wedding 911, TK should look at the conversations and traffic taking place and listen to its users?

Yeahhh. They're just too specific. Any question posed in Music, Food, Favors or Flowers could just as easily go into Ceremony and/or Reception, and probably does in a lot of cases when the other boards are dead. Maybe we need one SWAG board for all miscellaneous wedding accouterments/decorations. Make Ceremony just vows and officiant issues.

IMO, Registering/Gifts and Pre-Wedding parties should be combined, as should Wedding Party and Moms/Maids. (Did they intend for MM to be posted in by moms and maids? I don't think that's how that's actually working.)

But agree, if they still won't touch Budget/DIY then nothing else will happen here.

When I first joined the Moms and Maids board was The MOB and MOG board. It was more active then with an interesting group of moms and brides. After the name change, the moderator was absent for over two years and traffic slowed. Last year's catastrophe just about finished it off.

Ditto. It's intimidating as a n00b to see a thread with 6000 comments, and the other FAQ/New Here ones are ancient and closed.

  • No one reads the stickies, except for us old people who like to post on those long, long open threads. If we started fresh, more newbies might read them and participate. There are many good points in grumbledore 's threads on Etiquette, for instance, but I don't think that many people would have the patience to read through 600 or more posts. I wonder how everyone would feel about starting fresh with the cash bar and PPD threads.

  • Agree with most stated here. In particular:

    Personal traits
    - objectivity/fairness
    - good judgment

    Other
    - multiple mods per board
    - the idea of a private "mod board" to discuss warnings/banning/closing threads/TOS/etc.
    - a side widget for currently active mods
    - a process for mods to escalate community feedback to KGs (e.g. combining/splitting out certain boards)

On a side/unrelated note, I agree with @addiecake - Budget and DIY should be split. Especially with all the Pinterest DIY stuff being a thing right now. People need to be able to talk about strictly money-saving ideas separately from crafting.

  • I want to add that stickies like the 5 days freebees from almost a month ago, need to go.
Most stickies need to go. Controversial ones for frequently discussed topics should include the board consensus of the topic (like the etiquette approved answer on E board or the most common answers on other boards) and then be closed, to avoid the obnoxious back and forth on current stickies. The longer the thread, the less likely a newbie is actually going to read it.

On June 25th, KP said they would "be making an announcement about mods next week."

ETA: So that means either today or tomorrow, I guess, as Friday is a holiday.

Ohh okay, for some reason I thought the announcement was supposed to have been last week. Thanks for clarifying!
