Interview question

Is it okay to send a 'thank you' email to the person who interviewed me at a job interview Friday, or should I send an actual card through the mail to her? What do you guys typically do after an interview?

Re: Interview question

  • I typically send an email while everything is fresh in my head.  I'm always afraid that snail-mail won't make it (I know in my department we check it like once a week).

  • I always send an email because it's immediate. Like @Dignity100 said, it may take a while for office mail to reach the interviewer's desk.

  • I would usually send a follow-up thank you email. Snail mail could take too long so like PP have said, it's more immediate to do an email. A thank you card is really personal IMO so if this is a professional business setting then I think an email is best.
  • I agree on the email as it is much quicker. At the rate people are hiring these days, snail mail just might be too slow.

  • Email is much quicker, and you don't want to take the chance that they wouldn't see it.

I think one of my biggest regrets lately is that I sent a snail mail thank you to a job that I really wanted thinking that it would show how interested I was... I think "had I sent an email would I have gotten the job?"  I just read somewhere else that some people will send an immediate follow up email and then a thank you through the mail.  I think I'll do that next time!

  • Thanks, ladies! I just emailed her a thank you letter!

  • Either is fine. I've had people send me both before too. As long as you acknowledge it in some way, you should be fine.

  • It depended on how I had contacted the people previously. If it was all via email - I emailed.

If it was phone contact I sent a card.

  • I'm going to be the odd one out and say that I usually send a hand-written thank you note. This was reinforced when, a few months after getting interviewing for a job and mailing a card, I was working there and happened to notice the card still displayed in my interviewer's office. I think it sends an extra message that interviewers take note of (whether that message is, "I'm a really nice, thoughtful person," or, "I'm a pretentious sycophant," I'm not sure ;).

HOWEVER, that being said, I ultimately think that either way is perfectly acceptable, especially in this day and age. The only reason I was able to send my notes quickly through the mail was that I had them pre-addressed and stamped; all I had to do was scribble the note in my car after the interview and drop them in a post office box. Is it worth the effort? Maybe, maybe not. I don't think you can go wrong as long as you send something right away and it's a genuine, thorough note that reinforces the fit between you and the employer.
  • Geeze, I've never sent one.  Well, my current job is the only real "interview" I've ever had, but still, I've had meetings before getting jobs.  I just never thought about it or knew you were supposed to.  Whoops!!!
