Getting Anxious!

I ordered my dress in the middle of November and it still hasn't come in yet! After 7 months of waiting I am starting to go a little crazy. I was told to expect a phone call in June and now that it's so close I can't help but get stressed about it.

I'm worried that the dress will come in the wrong size, or that I will try it on and it won't look the way I remember it. I'm worried that the alterations or dry cleaning are going to end up ruining the dress (as every tailor or dry cleaner I've ever taken any clothing to has). Or what if I try it on and after 7-8 months my tastes have changed and I just plain hate it?

Re: Getting Anxious!

  • First, breathe.

Second, a lot of brides have the same concerns.  Do you have any pictures of you in the dress when you purchased it?  If so, take a look at those pictures and remember how you felt when you said yes to that dress.

I am not sure why you are concerned about dry cleaning though.  You shouldn't have to dry clean your dress but only get it steamed/pressed.  I would suggest maybe asking your salon for seamstress recommendations and then check out their recs on Yelp to see what others have to say.  Or if you know anyone who has recently been married, ask them where they went for alterations.

As for if your tastes have changed, have you had any doubts at any point between buying your dress and now?  If not, then you are probably safe to assume you will still love it.

I would give your salon until the end of June to call.  If they don't call by the first week of July then I would call them to see what is up with your dress.

  • I think if they said it would come in by a certain date and it didn't/they haven't called, I don't think it hurts to follow-up. I wouldn't tell them all the concerns you stated here :) but just "checking the status" and a reminder about your wedding date if they don't already have it.

  • Relax, try not to stress. June isn't over just yet. Chances are they can recomend someone who specializes in wedding gowns. For your alterations and steaming.

    When is your wedding?
  • I ordered my dress in March and I'm having the same type of anxieties (thinking 'what if they forgot to order the dress' and 'should have I paid the rush fee').

Did the store tell you when it should come in?  Who is the designer of the gown (perhaps others who also used that designer can give you insight on how long it took)?

I also agree - if you have pictures of yourself in the gown, look at them and remember why you fell in love with your gown.  As far as sizing, most dresses don't fit 100% out of the gate, that's why there are the alterations departments.  I'm sure they'll be able to get it to fit you if it doesn't fit proper.

  • Try and relax...it will be okay!

Call the salon to see if they have an estimated ship/arrival date. I did this a couple of times just to see and try to schedule around it.

I had pictures from the day we ordered my dress and I would look at those and think that I had made a mistake. Pictures won't do your dress justice, they just won't. So try to remember how excited you were about the dress and why you loved it.

Also, you shouldn't need it dry cleaned but rather pressed. Ask your salon for good seamstress recommendations.

If you tastes have, indeed, changed once you actually get your dress, you have to make a decision. Can you live with knowing you didn't LOVE you dress even though it is beautiful and you look awesome in it? Or do you want to sell it and try to find somehting new?

Either option is fine but you have to be prepared for the extra expense. I will say I had dress regret for a couple of days until I remembered how amazing I felt in my dress. Just wait it out and wait until you get the dress to make any descions.

  • Thanks for the words of wisdom.

I blame Say Yes To The Dress. I have been nothing but excited to finally see my dress again up until a couple of days ago when I binge-watched roughly 17 episodes. There's always some sort of disaster going on in the alterations department and one of the episodes was literally ALL about brides having to buy a new dress right before the wedding because their first one was ruined.

    Haha, stop watching RIGHT NOW!

I was positive I hated my dress after going on a SYTTD marathon and called my mom FREAKING out, positive I had made a terrible choice, blah blah blah.  My mom listened to my ramblings and then:

"You've been watching those shows again, haven't you?"
    "Uh huh..."
"Turn the fucking TV off right now and get a grip, girl."

    Gotta love mom advice.

That it is because it is a TV show and they have to up the drama for TV.

Honestly, half of the "alteration disasters" on that show are brides being complete idiots and not realizing that once the dress is fitted and altered then it will actually fit them correctly.

Just know that when you put your dress on, it will probably be too big or even slightly small in certain places.  Unless your dress was custom made to your exact measurements (which it probably wasn't but rather ordered to fit your biggest measurement) then it will need to be altered.
