Just got a check in the mail

Addressed to Mr. And Mrs. FI. Wedding isn't for another month and who knows when I will change my name?! Very grateful for the generosity, but I don't understand why people address checks like that!

Maybe they think you'll be excited to see your names like that? Or they thought it would take longer to get to you.
At our shower, my dad wrote me a check. Except that I haven't changed my last name with my bank after the adoption, so I couldn't cash it. Oh Dad.

  • We have randomly gotten checks like that, too.  My bank lets me deposit them into our joint account anyway.

  • My friend who recently got married told me that the same thing happened to her! She doesn't know what to do with the check lol.

This is why I wrote the a check to "Cash."

  • We don't have a joint account yet. FI will just have to deposit it, I guess.

This is why I just address it to Bride and Groom with their current last names. Or just cash.

I've heard some banks aren't accepting that anymore. If it gets lost anyone can cash it.

Yeah, my bank (Bank of America) won't accept these nor will the bank where FI used to work (Harris). I'm actually pretty sure that most banks don't.

We had a thread on this a while back... I think the consensus was the best way is to make payable to "Jane Smith OR John Jones" so whether she has changed it yet or not (or is planning to), either one can cash/deposit and they don't both have to be there.

  • I got one to Mr. and Mrs. H at the wedding.  But, due to my school, I chose not to change my name for about five months because it would change my university email and my name on rosters and would be a pain.

I was able to deposit the check by showing our marriage license and signing my name both ways.
