going dress shopping..and yes this is a serious question...

ok so this is probably a ridiculous question but...I'm going dress shopping for the first time friday (excitinggg) but, what do I wear underneath? What's proper etiquette? It seems like a dumb question but idk if I should wear a normal strapless bra...some full coverage underwear?? lmao I don't want the consultant to be uncomfortable nor do I want to be with some woman I don't know helping me in and out of dresses.

At my bridal appointment, I wore a strapless bra and some panties that covered most of my cheeks. :) I ended up trying on a bra that the store had, and the consultant helped me strap in (it had lots of hooks!).

I don't think they really get too uncomfortable because they deal with helping people try on gowns every day. I found I was projecting how uncomfortable I thought I would be onto the consultant.

The consultant has probably seen it all, but if I were you, I would wear a strapless skin toned bra and skin toned full coverage panties or even spanx over whatever pair of undies you want.  Some stores also have undergarments there for brides to put on with their dresses.

  • Also depending what store you go to you may not get the "Say Yess to the Dress" experience like on tv. I went to two small boutique shops and neither of them helped me into the dress. They handed me one through the curtain and said here put this on. Then once it was on, I'd open the curtain and they would do up the back. I've been with friends to David's Bridal and never seen the consultant go into the dressing room.

I wore a strapless bra and bikini underwear to my appointments, but 3/4 of the places I went offered me a strapless longline bra and slip to wear if I needed it.

My thinking is whatever you wear, it won't be anything the consultant hasn't seen before. If you're worried about it, though, call and ask!

  • My first bridal appointment I wore nude colored strapless bra and similar colored full coverage undies. The consultants at this place didn't help you get into the dress so it was my mom in the room helping me. When I went to DB, I wore the same get up but they gave me a bra there to put on as well as a slip. They did help me get into the dress there.
  • I was pretty much on my own where I tried on dresses (my mom helped me do the zippers, etc) and I wore full coverage nude underwear. I brought a nude strapless, but tried on my dresses sans bra (36 C). I won't be wearing a bra with the dress I bought, the material and bodice don't require it :)
  • I wore a convertible bra w/clear straps and spanx.  Most people will tell you not to wear a thong because there is a chance the consultant will see you in your underwear.

Every place I went offered me a long line strapless bra and shoes.  David's Bridal also had me put a slip on.

At one of my appointments, I loved a dress but didn't love all the cleavage I had and the consultant told me it was basically because the dress I was trying on had a built in bra plus the bra I already was wearing.  Since I was seriously considering the dress, she had me try on the dress with just the built-in bra the dress already had so I could see if I was more comfortable with the cleavage level that way (and I was, but it wasn't the dress).

  • I went dress shopping at David's Bridal. Before trying on any dresses the consultant gave me a long line bra and slip to put on. She never saw me in my underwear and it didn't really matter what I was wearing. I think it all depends on where you are going but, if you are not sure what your store does I'd go with a strapless bra and some bikini style panties. Have fun dress shopping!!

  • I only went to davids bridal and they have me a strapless longline bra and a slip to put on, the davids bridal consultant then hooked all the hooks on the bra. My consultant also helped me into each and every dress dress I had tried on and I would say I tried on about 10-12 dresses plus going back to the final 2 I had it narrowed down to.

  • I wore a nude strapless bra. All the places I went to besides david's had me keep this on. One other place gave me a slip to put on. I also wore high-waisted white or nude granny panties. Super comfy. I joked about them, and one consultant thanked me for wearing them, and especially for not wearing a thong.
  • Davids will always give you a longline bra to put on, because they want you to buy it.   Every salon I went to helped me into the dress.   Wear full coverage undies and/or spanx, if you want/need shapewear and a strapless bra.

Even though the consultant probably HAS seen just about everything, don't wear a thong or g-string.  No one wants to see or be that close to your lady bits.

A longline bra is sort of like a mix between a bra and a corset.
