Negotiating with the DJ?

I’m hoping to negotiate with our DJ, but I don’t really know what to say. In general I'm not good at asking for things. Hoping you ladies can coach me.

Originally we talked to our DJ about a 6 hour dinner reception and ceremony coverage, and he quoted us a price that matched what’s on the pricing page of his website for that package. Now that we’re considering a shorter cocktail reception instead, we asked him for a quote for a 4 hour reception and ceremony coverage. The quote he gave is $50 over the price listed on his website for 4 hours plus ceremony. It’s not a big deal, we really like this DJ and he’s still within our budget either way. But if I can, I’d like to get him to match what’s on the website, or even knock it down a little. So how do I ask without coming across as rude or demanding? How did you negotiate with your vendors?

You say "well, I saw on your website that your price was XX for ABC..." and go from there. Leaving things open ended sometimes does a better job of guilting the other party into providing an explanation/ doing your will. And it's not you being a jerk, and your DJ knows that. S/He's trying to pull one over on you. You might even print out a screen capture of the price. The worst thing that happens is they say "I'm sorry, I can't do that" and then you should request a little something extra to make up for the cost difference. And if s/he doesn't change the price or provide something extra... I'm not sure I would go with them. $50 isn't usually a deal breaker, but I would feel cheated.

My photographer had a $200 coupon on Style Me Pretty. I felt like a jerk, but halfway through the meeting when we were talking about pricing, I said "Well, I was on Style Me Pretty and saw your advertisement for $200 off, is it possible to still get that?" She was shocked I read the whole article and said "yes, of course!"
