Re: HGTV

  • OMG! It was Love it or List It that made me post this. If I was Hilary I would have snapped at those entitled babies. I can't do House Hunters. This is why the only show I watch with any regularity on HGTV is Property Brothers.
  • I like Love it or List it.   However, just once I want Hilary not to have some "major" issue when she opens up the walls.    EVER.SINGLE.TIME she has to replace a joist or the electric is going to burn the house down.    DH and I start making bets on what the major budget busting problem is going to pop up.

I get it, they are normally older homes, there are bad renovators out there and you need some drama.  But damn if I was a first time owner with no experience I would be scared that behind the walls/floors of every older home is a major electrical issue or the second floor is going to be coming crashing  down.

One of her contractors just goes around bashing shit with sledgehammers looking for shit. Swear to god he goes into the basement and starts breaking into the floor every. single. time.

FI thinks they plan for that stuff. He thinks the gameplan is OK tell us what you really want fixed. Bathroom and kitchen. Sounds good, say that you want all of this shit done to this extra room, and when we have to fix this code violation instead of the extra room that you don't care about, pitch a huge shitfit so we can show you arguing and shit-talking with your spouse in the backyard.

  • Speaking of HGTV, Leave it to Bryan is on marathon now and watching him makes me very happy.  He's one of my TV renovator boyfriends.  :)

  • I love HGTV so much. I miss not having cable. I can pretty much any show on there and be entertain. I know it's drama, and may be scripted but I don't care ha.

  • I watch way too much HGTV and DIY Network...

We are getting ready to do a kitchen remodel and while we aren't going down to the studs it still terrifies me that they are going to find a major issue that we won't be able to afford to have fixed.  The house is only 21 years old and was built by a reputable builder so I doubt this will happen, but still.

I used to joke that Mike Homes was the only contractor that I wanted in my house.  :)

This is so me. I just like seeing other houses and what people do with them.  It also helped give us an idea of what did and did not like when we were getting ready to house hunt a few years ago.

  • I've wanted to take some of those whiny entitled couples into a locked room and make them watch their own episode for 24 hours, without a break.

I do get tired of all the "granite counter tops, open floor plan, and master suite" stuff. Doesn't anyone want to live somewhere interesting??

YES!!!! Pretty much any show where the people give a modest budget and a luxurious wish list, then get frustrated that the realtor can't pull their dream house out of his ass on their modest budget. Huge updated kitchens, walk in closets, large yards, privacy, and greats views aren't cheap. Unless you crap money, you need to realize you won't get EVERTHING on your wish list.
That annoys be about Property Brothers.  I love the show it's just that part where Drew shows them their dream house and then they act so surprised that they can't afford it and then go on and on about how they don't want a fixer upper.  I'm sorry you signed up to do the show, you know what it is, I'm not buying your protests.  Granted that's more on the producers than the homeowners.  Just acknowledge that the viewer gets this and have them show the fancy house as inspiration not a bait and switch.

I like that they show them a house with everything but out of price range. It's a wake up call that this is what nice stuff costs. But I wish they were upfront and said "The house I'm about to show you has everything you want. It costs XXXXX, but it's important for you to see why we have to start with a fixer-upper if you want X, Y, and Z for only XXXXX dollars."
Yeah, but those people agreed to be on Property Brothers so they know they are going to be shown a house that they can't afford and they know they are going to be renovating a home because that is the entire point of the show.  If they've agreed to do the show they've already had the wake up call.

OMG this thread is making me so happy. Okay, so once when I was waiting tables, the whole cast/crew from Holmes Inspection came in, and were so flipping nice. And damn if Mike Jr isn't a stone cold fox. Damn, son. And my parents friends were in an ep of LIOLI (not one mentioned), and the wife was suuuuuch a bitch in the episode! She's really quite pleasant in reality, so I'd imagine there's a good deal of forced drama but it was so awkward for several weeks. And finally, I saw one of the Property Brothers at my gym once. I'm not sure which one it was, but I nearly fell of the eliptical. Suffice it to say, many HGTV shows are/were filmed in Toronto. And I'm very important, with many important celebrity friends, as evidenced above. ETA: Why you eat my paragraphs, TK? And no option for source? Not cool.

So do they really house hunt while the renovation is going on or do they do the reno first and then go house hunting?

  • We watch HGTV quite often knowing everything that has been said so far.  EVERY time we watch HH I do exactly the same thing.  "They" say "we have a big decision to make...", and I say, "no you don't, you already bought the house you liar, liar, pants on fire!".  DH just kinda waits for it.

I think what always gets me is the beer budgets and champaign tastes.  I remember this one episode, I think it was Property Virgins, and this very young military couple was looking for a home.  They were early 20's and he was lower enlisted so their budget was fairly small.  Princess had to have tile floors, granite countertops, and stainless steel appliances - all, of course, with an open concept living space.  I am thinking their approved budget was in the 120 grand range and they weren't in a low cost of living area.  She would not budge and tore up everything they were shown because it didn't have her "must haves".  YOU CAN'T FREAKING AFFORD THOSE MUST HAVES BRATFACE!!!  YOU ARE JUST STARTING OUT!!!  Sorry...

When I see the really young couples with small budgets trying to start out with what their parents worked up to I get a little testy because they can't come close to qualifying/affording that kind of mortgage.

I have to admit, I really hate Rehab Addict.  The times I watch she does something really ugly and I hate it.  I also just really don't enjoy older homes.

  • I love when people are looking at a house and they say "Oh, I don't think so, I hate these couches." or "The paint on these walls just doesn't work for me."

Um hello people, the couches don't come with the house. They aren't bolted to the ground. And you can paint the walls!!!

She mostly does beautiful work (even if it isn't always to my taste) but sometimes she goes too far in trying to reuse old kitchen cabinets or bath vanities.  Sometimes it turns out great and sometimes I am just left scratching my head.

That being said, she makes those houses SAFE and livable and the new owner can remodel the kitchen if they want.

For what she does she doesn't need brand spanking new...  She takes condemned homes and makes them safe for occupancy.  Granite doesn't fit that goal.  :)

  • I can't remember which show I was watching.  Maybe Property Virgins and the wife didn't like the cabinets in the kitchen and wanted to knock some money off of their offer to make up for having to replace them.  The realtor flat out told her no, that cabinets were new and there was nothing wrong with them so they didn't need to be replaced they just didn't fit her personal taste and you don't lowball an offer for that.

I can't argue with anything you said and she does make them safe and liveable again which is great.  I think I just seem to catch the shows where she goes too far in reusing things and I scratch my head at the end.  DH would LOVE to buy and rehab a house.  NO.WAY.IN.HELL.

My parents live in a 200+ year old house.  Several decades ago it was renovated to add plumbing and electricity.  However, those things are now badly outdated (don't turn on too many things in the kitchen at one time).  They got an estimate to update the house. It was over a quarter of million dollars.  For that they could build a gorgeous brand new house on their property (of which they have a couple hundred acres). And that estimate didn't involve opening up any walls to see what kind of hell awaits them in there.

They were so fucking stupid. They wanted homes in a million plus area of fucking Savannah, GA, like on the super nice main drag where OF COURSE everything is beautiful and pristine. Dipshits. She made no money, and neither did he but there they were tripping balls about their expectations of a fucking mansion for $120k. They should've been looking even further out into the suburbs.
