Well, today sucks!

Late last year, our company announced they were closing our facility in Arizona. Thankfully, we didn't get laid off, but we're in the process of relocating. Today, they announced they are freezing our pensions. DH just turned 52, so not quite old enough to retire, but not too much longer to go. We calculated that with the freeze, he'll be losing $2,000/mo in pension income. I'm losing $3,000/mo!!!! UGH.

So, we're spending all of this money to move and buy a new home, but now we have to compensate for the loss in income. The only good part of this is that his drop in income may not affect us that badly because it may reduce our tax burden a bit since I'll still be working. Also, I've been calculating my retirement savings using the pension amount I'm currently vested at, rather than the estimated amount. So, I'm still on target.

Oh, and I have to shave my head today :( My hair is coming out by the fist full.

That really sucks! Is it still worth moving with the company if they are going to treat you like that? Where are they sending you to?

  • I am so sorry! Vibes that things start looking up!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Yep, an all around crappy day. Hang in there.

My DH already accepted a good job with the company in Texas. He leaves on Sunday. Our plan was for me to finish up my current assignment last month and join him this month. I was interviewing and then got sick. So, the plan now was for me to join him early next year, since my job is actually staying in AZ. But now, I need to rethink staying with the same company.

The only silver lining with moving is that the area near DH's new job is super inexpensive. So, we can buy a new home and keep our current home with zero issues.

  • Oh no, that is so stressful. Sending you lots of hugs and positive vibes.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that you're sick and now have the job stress on top of it.
Texas does have a very low COL, so that's good.  FI and I joke sometimes that we could sell our 1 BR apt in NY and buy a mansion down there!
  • Thanks everyone. Puppies, kittens, and wine make everything better. Too bad I can't have the wine, though!

I'm confident we will be fine. We're smart with our money, but this is just a nasty curve ball during a time in my life when everything is up in the air and unsettling.

  • I'm so sorry sending good vibes your way.

  • I'm sorry!
  • Just got home from the oncologist and they are increasing my chemo dose. I can't wait to feel like shit on top of all of this! I'm being admitted on Thursday for my second round. The increased dose better work!!

  • Jells, I'm so sorry you are going through all of this. I'm wishing you the best and keeping you in my prayers.

Side note: I just moved to AZ. If you need anything (coffee or anything) and happen to be near Scottdale, let me know!

Ugh, that sucks. Cancer is hard enough without having sudden financial surprises get dropped on you too. For what it's worth, when mine started falling out a month or so ago I opted not to shave my head. The change was just too dramatic for me at that moment so I just got a pixie and then let it go from there. There still a lot left at the neck area. I have a wig, but sometimes if I'm just running errands or going to the gym it's nice to throw on a baseball cap and just have acquaintances think I've cut my hair short for the summer...can be exhausting having to explain to people and answer questions constantly. Whatever route you go, rock it!

I live over on the West Side, but am being treated in Scottsdale. I'm not going out in public much, for fear of picking up any illness, but I'll let you know if I ever feel up to making an appearance!

:( That's too bad. I hope you won't be alone while your husband is in Texas. I'm sure serious illness never comes at a good time- but yours certainly picked one hell of a time to start up! Hugs your way. And I'm local too if you need any support or help. I'm available to cook, clean, etc.

Thank you so much for offering to assist!! (hugs) My DH is traveling back every two weeks and will stay for two weeks. In between, my mom will be here. I typically do not mind being far from family, but this is one time it would have been nice to be closer to my parents.

I just got my head shaved and it's a look that is going to have to grow on me. I may just have to throw my aviators on and take a pic. It will be so GI Jane!

  • Jells, thoughts and prayers with you in times of huge transition. Entertain yourself with thoughts of temporary tattoos on your head. My favorite? I've run into on the job: a guy with a fuel gauge, with the arrow pointing to "empty." Yep. Good thing hair grows!
  • ::hugs::

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Totally understand. If you need anything dropped off or anything, just holler. I'm not super busy with friends since I just moved here and don't know anybody! Perfect errand girl.
