Useless information time: a button-down shirt is actually a specific thing.  It's where the collar buttons down onto the shirt to keep it in place.

But most people, myself included, just use it interchangeably with "button-up" and "button-front."

I'm convinced there is exactly one woman on earth who looks chic in a button-front shirt:
