NWR - Mexico recommendations

So I've never been to Mexico.   I haven't really had a real desire, but living out here it is closer and short flight times.

DH has been working his but off, so we were thinking about 4-6 days at an all-inclusive.   Which is not normally our style, but we really just want to take naps, drink at a swim up bar, maybe he will play golf one day.  I might go diving or hit a spa (or both).   We want something with decent food.

This board gets more traffic so I was hoping to hear some suggestions.

Oh we want to go at the end of Oct/first part of Nov.

  • We stayed at the Moon Palace and loved it. DH has friends that go there every year and we went base on their recommendation. There is a spa and golf course, and mini golf. It wasn't a downside to use, but the resort is really large so it can be a long (like 10 minute) walk to the dining areas. I thought the food was good, better at the restaurants that required reservations than the buffet. Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Are you thinking Cancun/Riviera Maya or Cabo?

We really love the Zoetry properties. For real top shelf liquor, excellent food, smaller properties. Zoetry Paraiso in the Riviera Maya has an awesome spa as well!

Iberostar Grand, Excellence Playa Mujeres, Secrets Maroma, and El Dorado Casitas are also great!

If you're looking for more quiet and relaxing I'd suggest moving towards the Riviera as opposed to Cancun.  Cancun has a lot of nightlife and shopping if you're interested in that!

We're getting married in Puerto Aventuras, which is close to Playa Del Carmen, I haven't been there yet but it looks amazing :)

    No preference.

Thank you for the suggestions.  I will check them out.

  • In Cabo, we have stayed at Zoetry Casa Del Mar and Westin Los Cabos. If you have a strong interest in the beach, I'd recommend riviera Maya over Cabo. The water is not as blue in Cabo and most beaches are not swimmable.

  • Good to know.  I would like to dive, but other than that I'm just as happy at the pool.

I just got back last weekend from staying at the El Dorado Royale on the Riviera Maya (Cancun).  All of the Karisma resorts - Especially their El Dorado line, are excellent, and are totally all inclusive.  It was FANTASTIC, and I can't wait to go back!  :)

The staff is excellent, the food is top notch, and the beach is gorgeous!  Have fun!

  • I just came back from Catalonia Riviera Maya in Puerto Aventuras. Food was GREAT.  The only complaint I have was that we upgraded our room at check in since the guy sold us on all the features, one of which being an upgraded view from the garden view and another room service.  Well our "upgraded" view was a parking lot and a building, so we asked to switch rooms and ended up with a garden view again, and a room next to the housekeeping closet.

So aside from being given a shitty room, everything else was great.  Food was awesome, pool and beach great too.  And the drinks.

  • Jells2dot0 mentioned above, the thing with Cabo is that many beaches are not swimmable. Although, what we did was take like a $3-$5 "ferry" 5 minutes away to a small swimmable area of the beach.

I went to Acapulco 16 years ago so I cannot really vouch for how it is now, but I remember it was gorgeous and I absolutely loved it. My friend is currently there on her honeymoon, so I will ask her how it was and how she liked it. I remember the water was beautiful, and at the time, the town was full of Mexican culture.

@pinkcow13 I have also heard that Acapulco is gorgeous, however, I have also heard that as of late it's one of the areas to stay away from, have you heard that? I tend to take the warnings about Mexico with a grain of salt, because I've been there three times and never felt unsafe.

  • BreMR - Yup, I think I heard that last year or so. Same here with taking it with a grain of salt. I have also been there 3 times, twice with family, and once with friends, and always felt safe. My friend always carefully researches where she goes, so she probably felt the same way since she and her husband decided to honeymoon out there.

My sister used to do marketing for Karisma and she loved their properties. I have heard a lot of really great things. FI and I went to a wedding a few years ago at an all-inclusive near Tulum and I wish I could remember the name so I could tell you not to go. It was horrible.

Cabo San Lucas is great, and also safe.  We honeymooned there, and can't wait to go back.  DH wanted all inclusive, I wanted somewhere safe enough that we could venture out into the town and actually experience the place.  Cabo was a hit for both of us.
  • We are going to Secrets Maroma in Riviera Maya for our honeymoon! So excited!

You should check out the Secrets resorts. They look beautiful and we got a really good deal.
