How to match accessories to gown?

I never thought I would be one of those brides. I went in to this with the assumption that gowns were white or ivory. Now I'm like, "Well, my dress is ivory. But not a yellow ivory. No, no, I think that <insert random coordinating wedding item here> is more of an off white. Mine's very warm. More like a champagne. But it's not as dark. Etc." Basically, I have no idea what color it is and the dress does not arrive until September. It's not like I have a handy swatch to take everywhere like my bridesmaid dress. 

How do you all do it? How do you know what goes well with your dress for shoes, hair accessories, etc? Do you just call it good enough with the binary representation of ivory or white?

I hear ya. My dress is champagne and ivory, so I stressed over whether I "should" be wearing gold accessories rather than silver. But my E ring is white gold, and I wanted to borrow my BFF's headpiece from her wedding, which is silver, so I ran with that. At the end of the day, all metals are neutral so you can't really go wrong. Go with what you like and don't overthink it.

I kept it easy for shoes and picked some that matched my bridesmaid color. Aqua dresses and nude shoes for them, champagne/ivory dress and aqua shoes for me.

They say white gowns go with silver. Ivory gowns go with gold. But I don't think this should be a rule, just a suggestion. My dress is ivory with silver details. Also, I'm not a fan of gold so my jewelry will be silver.

I wore an heirloom necklace, so that decided what metals I wore. I went color for my shoes, and guessed with my hat

Honestly, I had no idea. I picked out shoes I liked and bought earrings in the color I wanted. I didn't know if it would all look good together until I had my first fitting last month.
