My dress turned yellow!

Perhaps my worst nightmare.  I got my dress in Feb for my Aug wedding.  Took it to my seamstress last week to start alterations, and part of the fabric turned yellow!  A professional cleaner said nothing can be done (she tried to spot clean it but didn't work).  The bridal shop is going to call the manufacturer and see if there is something to do, but does anyone have any suggestions?  The fabric is 100% polyester, like tulle/organza.

Re: My dress turned yellow!

  • Off the top of my head, the only thing I can think of is see if the alterations could somehow dye/stain it a champagne color.

How did it turn yellow?  Was it stored in a bag or sunlight?

  • Yikes!! If the manufacturer can't express another dress, you may consider buying something off the rack or looking for the same dress used online.

  • Hmm. The place I am using to clean my gown provides a 50-year guarantee that if your gown yellows after they preserve it, they re-process the gown for free. So I'm not sure that it wouldn't be possible to get rid of the yellow. They are very expensive, but may be worth a try (they take shipments of gowns from all over the country). http://www.jscheer.com/

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear this.

I've heard there's a trick to help whiten yellowed dresses using cream of tarter, but I'm not sure I'd advise it unless you're a professional. The good news is, if it cannot be fixed you still have a month --- better a month than a week!

*Runs to call my mom to ask her to check on the color of my dress which is being stored at her house until the wedding.*
