  • My finace and I are getting married in May 2015 and we're deciding on our honeymoon right now. We've decided on a location and have our top 2 hotels we'd like to stay at in mind. His parents are paying and want to take care of booking everything.

I've been researching where we wanted to stay that fits within their price range of about $3500-$4000 for so long and have so many details about what we'd like. (ex. what kind of suite, ocean view balcony, honeymoon package that includes wine, rose petals, a romantic dinner for 2, and more) His parents want to go through a travel agent instead of expedia which is going to make it way more expensive so we might not be able to get everything we originally planned for...maybe not even the same hotel.

Is it wrong that I'm kind of upset about this? You only get a honeymoon once (well hopefully lol) and i kind of wanted it to be how we planned. I feel like a bitchy spoiled brat right now.... I wouldn't mind helping them out financially if they couldn't afford it. It's just I'm afraid to bring it up because I don't wanna come off as unappreciative. Should I just let them decide all the details or would it be overstepping if I said something?

You have two choices: be grateful that they're giving you a $4000 gift (holy shit that's nice of them!), OR tell them no thank you and you'll pay for the honeymoon yourselves.

You honestly do sound extremely spoiled and ungrateful in this post. Ugh - lots of people would love to have a honeymoon period and you're complaining that $4000 isn't enough? Would you seriously risk coming off as a spoiled brat and seriously damaging your relationship with your inlaws right off the bat so you can have an ocean view room and rose petals on your bed? Priorities.

You sound like you know this is BS so read through your post again and imagine its your future daughter in law talking about the honeymoon you're trying to generously gift to her and your future son. If that doesn't help the perspective, no advice you get here will...

  • You do realize that Expedia is essentially an online travel agent right?  Travel agents are typically compensated by the resort, so you really shouldn't be paying more.  I think that if they're paying, then they get a say in how it's paid for (i.e. travel agent).  Either you pay for the trip yourself, or do it their way.
  • Thank you thats exactly why I didn't want to say anything. You're completely right.

My fiance and I checked out quite a few local travel agents in town and they were all a couple hundred dollars more than expedia. But anyway thank you for replying and I understand now that it's pretty stupid for me to feel that way.
  • you do sound bratty.

There is nothing that says you can't upgrade items on your own once the HM has been booked.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Crap I'm on my phone... Someone with a bat signal?

  • Somebody call the whaaaaaaammmmbulance.

  • Not addressing the disappointment of the OP, a message for lurkers and everyone alike: there are lots of travel agents out there- online (Expedia), specialists you can chat with, or even Costco. As with anything, there are good ones and bad ones. A good human specialist travel agent can get you the price you see online AND provide excellent guidance for your trip, including potential perks because of their relationships with suppliers!! I travel all over the world and having the guidance of an expert and someone who actually knows where the destination is on a map is very important :)

We plan most of our trips ourselves, because we don't go anywhere terribly exciting and usually we're going to see people we already know.

But I've always kind of wanted to plan a trip with a real human travel agent and I'm happy to hear that the experience can be as good as I imaged it would be. So thanks for sharing that info!

    That's all I had to say. :)

You should go into a meeting with a TA prepared with your research already done.  Show them what you found via Expedia.  They know darn well you're able to give your money to Expedia but they want your business so they can easily match those prices...and typically throw on some extras (like rose petals, champagne, etc.)

I hope you change your tune, however...  You sound very entitled and instead you should be over the top thankful for their generous gift.

Yes, absolutely.  Is there a reason you can't pay for whatever upgrades you want?
