Anyone doing a funny first dance?

So me and my fiancee will be dancing to Blake Shelton "Over" then after a cut in chorus were going to do a fun dance to a hip-hop song because were very quirky like that. Anyone else doing a fun dance?

  • Yeah, were only doing it for about 2 minutes. I can see why its over done but every wedding I been too in my state or heard of no ones really done it here. So I think my friends and family will have a ball because they know how silly we are :)

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • Its YOUR day Have FUN!!!! I could never get FI to do it but I've seen some cute ones but agree about making it short.
  • As long as its not any longer than a regular first dance I don't see any reason not to do this.  FI and I won't be doing a funny dance but I don't see how its any different than subjecting the guests to four minutes of swaying by the couple.  I'd rather watch two people have a little fun.
  • We didn't plan to do one, but got pulled up on stage to learn a quick Hula dance during a Polynesian show we had. I guess that was our first dance. Other guests did it too. My Brother and SIL did a pre-choreographed dance. It was pretty cool for about the first 30 seconds. Then it got tired to watch

  • Are you trained dancers (if not, have someone else choreograph it) and is this something you're going to put time, energy and money into? I have seen this three times and it was suuuuper awkward when someone forgets a step.
  • Nope, we are not doing this.

I've seen it done and honestly, it just ends up being really awkward.
  • This past weekend I saw one. It was cute the first minute, then AW.
  • Not happening.

    Not a chance.
  • No, definitely not. It's super awkward for all parties involved.

Nope. We're sticking with the good ol' wrap you in my arms and sway in post-marital bliss for our first dance. The song we chose is upbeat though.

TBH, I dislike when people do choreographed dances. It's almost never that great, and lots of times B & G are so hell-bent on remembering everything they don't even look like they're having fun.

  • Nope. No way.

FI are awful dancers. Our choice of song for a first dance will be largely an issue of how short we can make it.

We'll embarrass ourselves at some point in the night already. No need to get extra help.

  • Nope.  I'm a dancer, I've been dancing most of my life and we didn't do any chorographed dance.  Despite how goofy and silly we can get we didn't want our guests to sit through some so awkward.

  • We did it, but it's a definitely know your family and crowd type thing. Ours loved it, still hear positive feedback from it. Ours was the mix of different music types, 15-20 sec of each. Our music was professionally put together, we had a choreogropher help us put the dance steps together seamlessly, and we practiced a lot.

We paid well over $500 for all of this, but it was worth it so we didn't look like even bigger dorks on the dance floor.
  • I've been to a few weddings with this - 2 in the last year.

One was serious - like they took ballroom dancing lessons and then had a ballroom dance choreographed. So awkward, so boring.

The other was a "silly" one - also choreographed. It was not funny to anyone (except their mothers maybe). People watched the first 20 seconds or so until everyone realized what it was.. You could literally feel awkwardness slap everyone in the face. Glances were exchanged, some people quietly went to the bar, etc. And everyone LOVED this couple - they're really good friends of ours. It was just really AWish and, frankly, terrible to watch.

  • @jenajjthr Yeah I really think it depends on what kind of friends and family you have. Mine are fun and open minded and younger type crowd. That's really cool. I am glad people are still talking about it :) Sounds like it went well. What songs did you guys mix? I used to do a lot of dance shows in high school and worked with a choreographer before. I actually know one who does it for a living he was in my dance squad in high school.  He is really good!

  • Nope.

Neither of us are good dancers so we will look like a couple of kids at our first school dance.

  • The songs I remember; The Twist, Cotten Eyed Joe, Thriller, Ice Ice Baby, Footloose, Walk Like an Egyptian, Greased Lightning, Hammer Time (i think that is the name), the song from Dirty Dancing where they dance at the end, and others. You can youtube this type and get lots of ideas on song choices. We took the songs that we knew we could do steps to (easy dance steps) and cut out ones that were too difficult for us. We did have our "traditional" song at the beginning and end that got cut into in. The only person it actually scared that the "screech sound" was a real screw up was my mom, but she is highly gullible. She enjoyed it the most though once she figured out the "joke."
  • Yeah I can see that but again I have never seen or heard of it done in my state I have asked around and got locals opinions even the venue were having it at and our local DJs so I guess it will be fun for our guest :)

FYI - your DJ and the staff at your venue are not going to tell you to your face that this funny/silly dance is a bad idea.

This. Your DJ and your staff are paid vendors (i.e. "yes" people).

Also, the two events I mentioned in a previous post, the demographic was very young and, I would say, open minded. A bad idea is a bad idea - young/old, trendy/conservative, etc.

It sounds like you're going to do this no matter what honest feedback you get. If so, I would keep it very short because people will find this AWish and boring.........
